Just got back from one of the local test centers - passing grades on both exams! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Only took 22 questions to pass the hardware test. I got to question 26 of the OS test and started getting nervous. Got the "congratulations" screen after 27.

I bought the Mike Meyers A+ Passport book Thursday last week and started my studying. While it definitely helped, overall I must say I am dissatisfied with my purchase. Several errors, typos, omissions and passages that led to confusion.

I even decided to spend $20 to upgrade the sample exams (you get more questions and a few more options online). Yes, I know - fool me twice, shame on me. Found an error there as well. I alerted them with an email, and got a reply stating they were aware of the error but that they could not fix errors on CD's that had already been distributed (no $#!+, Sherlock), but that I should upgrade to the web version where the error was corrected. Admittedly, my email wasn't clear as to where the screenshot I included came from, but the CD and web versions look different enough to know the difference. If you're familiar with the product.

As I stated, I can't say I wasn't better prepared after reading it, but I can't say it's a quality product, either.

Did I make a mistake? Did I forget something?

I think I did...

My true studying started not last Thursday, but when I wanted to make Windows run a little faster on my home computer. My studies took a wonderful turn for the better when I discovered http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif and these forums. Thanks to all of you! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I was thinking about getting that book myself although I think I'll spend some time in Barnes and Noble reading. Did you pretty much read everything on pcguide.com and combine it with the book?

Like I said, my true studying, for the OS exam, began when I decided Windows needed some "help." I started "studying" for the hardware exam when I decided that opening up case - and the power supply - to blow out the dust was a good idea. If the PSU is that dusty, just replace the thing - trust me. I blew the PSU, shorted the MB and fried the CPU, modem AND sound card when I plugged that sucker back in. That was actually the event that led me to this message board! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I've read, I guess, 20 pages of the PC Guide. I read the book cover to cover and used the practice tests on the included CD and online. I briefly glanced here (http://studynotes.net/). And I definitely made sure I looked over the objectives of the test, laid out in the blueprints (http://www.comptia.org/certification/aplus/all_about_aplus.htm).

Hey Penta:

Well congratulations - but I am confused

Your name shows registered June 2002

Event that brought you here was blowing PC etc

That this incident motivated you to get A+

Read Meyers cover to cover etc etc

And then took and passed A+

All that in 14 days??

Yikes! What am I missing here??

The guy's just real good!

Actually, I think Penta_chris is the man who used to be known as Pentachris, a long time contributor to the forums. I don't know why he changed his name, but I guess some things are best left unknown.

What I don't understand is why he hasn't got alot more congratulations for this accomplishment. Maybe no one recognizes him since he changed his name.

Well that would explain it:

I was getting real depressed - I have heard of crash courses and brain dumps etc - but the 14 days really blew my mind

I was ready to pack up my tools and go into gardening or something

definately Congrats are in order here, but A+ is just the bare[/b] bones of certs out there-it's the most basic.

I would here out suggest that getting his Net+,inet+, Linux, and some MCSE certs will help him round out his day. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Iisbob is right. Network+ is my next target.

Steve is right, too. Pentachris and I are the same. But my friends call me Kornfeld. Herbert Kornfeld.

Look at pentachris's profile. His email address is pentachris@hotmail.com. Tell the server you want to edit your profile, and when it asks for your username & password, tell it you forgot your password. Enter pentachris@hotmail.com as your email address - you'll be told the address isn't registered. I managed to botch my profile trying to protect my email address.

Long story, but penta_chris is new, improved, and has a cert under his belt. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
