I went into BIOS and it said... something CPU.. something in BIOS, next to the frequency regulator.

It was on auto, curious, i put it down to 6x.

Now i dont get any input from my monitor.

Nothing, the computer starts, and it seems that its booting.

But no POST, nothing. The BIOS wont respond (ive removed the RAM, unplugged the Video card, and unplugged my CPU Fan(Though it was still plugged in to the PSU directly))

so what can i do?

EDIT: im going to leave the CMOS battery out longer (30-45mins as recommended by a friend as opposed to the 10mins i did) to see if that helps.

ive found what i messed up.

Did you unplug the system when you took out the CMOS battery? Push on the power button while it is out to help drain the capacitors.

Umm, btw, it's usually a good idea to find out what something in the BIOS does first before you tinker. :p :)

jlreich,

that worked!

Good News and Bad News
Good News: that worked, it gave me an output to the monitor.

Bad News: when putting the IDE devices back in, i must have pushed to hard as the mobo tapped the case, resulting in a short.

Now the mobo will only power on if i tap it near the IDE devices on the case, how can i fix this now?

What do you mean by "the mobo tapped the case"?

Do you mean the mobo flexed so much that it bent and touched the case?

If that's what happened, if the system wasn't running it shouldn't have shorted out, but it may broken a lead inside the PCB. I would carefully over the mobo to see if you can see any visible cracks.

Yes.

The Mobo flexed and touched the case.

No visible cracks, nothing out of the ordinary.

so if there is a broken lead inside the PCB, what can i do?

Probably not much. Is this a self-built system such that you can easily replace the motherboard?

Alex is right if a lead in the PCB is shorted there isn't anything you can do except replace the mobo.

Look at any capacitors near the flexed area to see if maybe any of them got any bent or broken leads or anything like that. If you or someone you know is really good at soldering the caps can be replaced.

Also you say "tapping near the IDE devices" will get the system to turn on. Double check everything around there, power cables etc. Make sure there are no bent pins in the power and data connectors. Make sure you didn't bend any pins in the USB headers to were they are touching and shorting out, if you have any near the area.

Try RMAing it, but I would plan on getting a new Mobo.

whats RMAing it?

yeah. the mobo id have to get next would be a Celeron D. 3.35GHz, so its not that bad. The RAM will be used via my old system..
the total =170$
something a 14 year old doesnt come by so easily.
so would anyone have a spare mobo that uses DDR RAM?

RMA = THIS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_Merchandise_Authorization).. worth a try I suppose, ..wouldn't hold your breath though!..:rolleyes:

Reseat all cables,,, but CAREFULLY this time!

Try others as well. Swap ide cables. Try the reset switch for a power switch, so-on so forth before giving up the ghost on that mobo.

Yes, make sure you test everything possible before giving up.
