View Full Version : New hack - auto-scroll

Hi folks,
I just hacked several files to make the forums automatically scroll the browser to the last posting in a topic. For long threads this will save you the hassle of having to scroll down numerous times past stuff you've already read to get to the newest posting. And of course, you can still scroll up if you want to review earlier postings.
I personally have always wanted this functionality as it saves me a considerable amount of time when going through many forums.
Like it? Hate it? Lemme know! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah, I only update those every couple of days. It gets tiring doing them every single day, especially if I want to avoid "recycling". http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Not sure if I like it...now I have to scroll up to the top when I open a post I haven't seen yet, and a couple answers are already there...I always re read from the top anyway...
Six of one, half dozen of the other...

What you're saying makes sense, Pete. I think it depends on how one reads the forums as well. (Since you read and post a lot I am actually a bit surprised that you don't like it showing the last posting.) I find it saves me a lot of scrolling down when someone adds something new to a topic.
If enough people prefer it the other way I might be able to put in a parameter or control somewhere that will make it go back to the other way of working for those who want it...

ixl,
I agree with Paleo Pete on this one, although I was waiting for someone else to post it first. Gee I'm a coward. No Crocodile Dundee here that's for sure. :-) Saying that brings back amusing memories of working in the corporate world of a large national company in Sydney. "Talk about Yes Sir, No Sir, Three Bags Full Sir". Ah, big business.
Back to the topic. Why scroll??? What’s wrong with Ctrl+Home, Ctrl+End, PageUp or PageDown?
Cheers.......Son of Zeus.

Well, it saves me a lot of scrolling. I almost never need to re-read earlier postings in a topic.
However, I'm glad you guys told me you don't like it. Anyone else? I'm not sure how to make it so it goes both ways, but I'm sure it's possible. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

It doesn't really matter to me--it just means that now I'm hitting CTRL-HOME to read stuff that I've missed, rather than CTRL-END to skip stuff I've already read http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

After having a few days to check it out, I don't like it. Then again, I never use the mouse to scroll, and the Home key takes me right back to the top, so no big deal. If folks like it, leave it. I can put up with it. Home key takes about 0.002 seconds...
With all the myriad posts in 3 forums, I have to read each one from the top to avoid confusion. I spend 3-5 hours every day answering questions, or trying to, and racking my old bald head for info, searching the net for 45 minutes at a time for a clue, digging through a half dozen books and several loose leaf binders of printed info. The old noggin gets dingy after a while, and even when I start fresh, all the different topics jumble together, so I have little choice but to read each one from the beginning to be sure I remember everything about it.
Guess this is a case of you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please some of the people all of the time...If the general consensus is agreeable, leave it...I can scroll...

Naw, I don't like it either... I much prefer reading the earlier posts, in order, to get an accurate impression of what's going on! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, good sir (ixl ofc), why not make it so that us users have a choice as to which way it goes... a setting in our preferences or a cookie or something?
Heck, if you wanted to (despite the obviousness of how much of a PITA it would be), why not make it so that you and you alone can see it the way you want it? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Well, this is just MHO/idea...

shadowmonkx,
excuse my Aussie ignorance. But "MHO" I know. "ofc" I know. But "PITA"???
In the words of my first real manager: "Please explain".
Cheers.......Son of Zeus.
P.S.
Where is Uncle Charles? Haven't spotted him in awhile.

Sorry to keep raining on your parade, but I kinda don't like it either. Although I'm a newbie here, I find on other boards there are more new threads that I want to check out than old threads that I'm following, so it's more likely that I'll want to be at the top. Ctrl+Home does take just a second, tho'.

ok now someone tell me what "ofc" is...Thought I'd seen 'em all...and can't even guess it, as I did with about a half dozen or so...
