Visit newegg.com, and limit your search to "LGA 775". This is the socket motherboard that core 2 duo's go in.

Some socket LGA 775 motherboards do not support Core 2 Duo processors.

It would take several days of research for us to list all of the motherboards that support Core 2 Duo processors.

Here is good list (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280+1070625638+107171927&Configurator=&Subcategory=280&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=) to start working from. They all support Core2 Quads as well. You can narrow it down by required features and price from there.

Those are all nVidia 600 series chipset boards.

What about the nVidia 500, Intel, Via, SIS, and ATI/AMD chipset boards?

Just trying to narrow it down some. As you said a complete list would be extensive. :)

I would recommend the 680i, but left in the 650i for cheaper options.

Here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010200280+1070625638&Configurator=&Subcategory=280&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=) is a more complete list (105 results). You can narrow it down by manufacturer, features, price or whatever from there.

If you have money go for the P35 motherboard. They support FSB 1333MHz. (Some 680i as well actually, but few and far in between).

The thing that concerns me wit the P35 boards is this -

PCI Express x16: 2 x PCI-E x16 (blue @ x16 mode, black @ x4 or x1 mode)

Not a problem if you never plan on using two video cards. But I always like to keep my options open.

Also I see alot of "only supports memory in the memory compatibility list" in the specs of these boards. Not good IMHO.

Rond, you have one of the P35 boards don't you? What are your thoughts?

I visited a PC shop and was suggested Intel D945GCCR and D945GCWZ. I was told that these two are also compatible with Dual Core and Core2Duo of Intel. These are also affordable. So should I norrow down my search to these two?

jlreich;

Both of my Core 2 systems have i975X chipset motherboards an Asus P5W-DH and an Asus P5WDG2-WS PRO

The P35 is a mainstream/value chip set, the P38 will be the enthusiast chip set and should be out soon, maybe it will have 2 X16 slots and support CF at X8.

Maybe Intel and ATI have a contract that says Intel desktop chipsets must support CrossFire and Intel is screwing AMD over by only supporting CrossFire in X4 and not X8 configuration.

Probably after the contracts between Intel and ATI end, Intel will not renew them with AMD and we won't see anymore Intel chipsets that support CF and there won't be anymore ATI chipsets that support Intel processors. The LGA 775 socket is proprietary and can only be used under license from Intel and they won't license AMD for anything.

If I was going to buy an Intel motherboard it would be the Intel BOXD975XBX2KR (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121059) until the P38 boards come out in Sept or Oct.

If you look at this list (http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/chipsets/index.htm?iid=chips_body+desk#performance) Intel has not released a performance chipset since the 975X. The 975X chipset was made for the Pentium D processor and it took a PCB and BIOS revision to support Core 2 Duo processors.

That D945GCCR is Very limited
Has little room to grow with
Only 2 memory slot and

Expansion Capabilities
One PCI Express* x16 bus add-in card connector
One PCI Express* x1 bus add-in card connector
Two PCI Conventional* bus connectors

It is also a MICRO ATX mother board
Are you building a game cube ?
Again it is to limited for a system that you intend to expand on.
