There definitely boards out there that support multiple CPU's. But they are meant for servers and high end workstations and are usually pretty expensive. Although there are enthusiasts that will use them for gaming.
Going with a single multi-core CPU is the easiest and cheapest way. Unless you have specific needs and the budget to match. :)
Also note that XP home does not support more than 1 physical CPU. XP pro supports multiple CPU's but after 2 physical CPU's you get into buying more licenses for the OS. When it come to cores you don't have to worry about it. I am a little foggy on the licensing thing, so someone will correct me if I am wrong.
Here is a Good link for all the SMP info you can use

As stated above they are costly
But IF you have the software and the $$
They are great
A dually ( 2 cpu's) in a work station will run rings around a core dual and even some of the core 2 duals
BUT ONLY if you have the software to make use of them.
Windows does NOT make good use of the dually
Photoshop, Autocad, and others make excellent use of the dually
Also AMD is not the only one in that market
The Intel XEON chips even allow quad core

Pentium D?
thats already been seceded by the Core2 line of processors.
Core2 VS Xeon, it depends, are you just looking for a desktop, or a server?
Xeon is the way to go if you need 8, 16, or more processors. I'm not sure on how many you can get exactly.
Core2 is for the desktop. Core2 Duo is 2 processors in 1 physical processor.
Core2 Quad is 4 processors in 1 physical processor.
I'm not sure about Core Extreme.
Also, I'm not sure that the Core line supports more than 1 physical processor.
Overall, Xeon would probably beat out Core2. It all depends on what you're planning to do.
