Hi folks! The new chat channel is set up, and I just spent a few hours putting together several pages on it.
The pages start with a listing of warnings about IRC and the rules for the channel, and then provide complete instructions for accessing the channel. There is also a FAQ with answers to common questions, and links to other IRC chat resources online.
Check it out at http://www.PCGuide.com/irc.htm and hope to see you on the channel soon!

Hi there. I think that it is a great idea to have a chat line. Currently I am taking a corresponence pcrepair course and find it challenging sometimes. I always have questions. However, I have been in there three times today and no one was there. What's up with that? Have a nice day.

The chat room is brand new. It will take some time for it to "gel". Early on, only a few people show up, so what happens is, person A comes, sees nobody, leaves. Then person B shows up, sees nobody, leaves. Etc.
If we give it time, it will work out. We just all need to keep using it. Perhaps setting up a specific meeting time?
As for me, I won't be there except very briefly during the day on most weekdays. I will be around in evenings and weekends, though not all the time obviously.

I think a specific time would be a good thing, that was the original idea. Once it gets rolling, I think we'll have drop-ins more frequently, so folks won't find it empty as often.

If someone wants to suggest a "get-together" time, by all means do so...
Also, if you enter the chat room and the topic says I am around, then say something and maybe /msg me, and I'll eventually get there. Many people show up and leave so fast that I never get a chance to say hi. I have to keep writing more pages for this dumb web site, so I can't sit staring at the IRC window all the time. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi folks. I've got a picture in my head. I see the chat channel as having two functions. The first is what Ken was talking about. It would be great to have a set time, and a set info source, where we could walk together through a certification course. Seeing this is foremost a hardware site, A+ sounds good to me. I can see it now... 7pm, Sundays. The "Paleo Pete's Hometime Computer Hour", to fill us in on all this DOS stuff. autoexec.bat, win.ini, msdos.sys. I could sure use an expert to walk me through all this. How about...."Randy's Repair Shop". 12-1pm Weekdays. Folks can call in for realtime, real/life, repair tips. I guess he'll have to give up his lunch hour. But this guy's good. Being kept up to date, by someone in the trenches is vital. I could find work for all you guys. Sorry.
The other thing the chat channel can do is provide a place where indiviguals can get together to work on an ongoin' problem. The other day Sea had a project goin' and needed some help. It worked ok through the forums, but real time would have worked better, I bet. He even asked if anyone had instant messenger. Bingo! Perfect for the chat channel. We all could have benefitted from seeing it worked out in realtime.
Oh well, I've gone on to long. Know what I mean?

I got booted due to a snafu now corrected. Who else got booted, and why?
BTW, do not try to connect to Austnet more than once. You'll get banned. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Just to clarify to some folks about the IRC thing-I don't have IRC so I just chose the Java option and it has worked fine for me...so don't be thnkin' ya have to do a lot of work to get there...It truly is just a couple of clicks away.
Steve if you notice in their myriad of posts I suggested that they use the channel, but some of them had firewall issues and such. Although, I'm not sure what they would have had to do to use the Java option.
I like the idea of people volunteering time on the channel, but I'm afraid if we go there it is possible that we could ultimatley push them away (burn-out). Have you noticed some of the original regulars are not here now? Anyways, I check the channel a few times during the day. Charles had said something about putting a link on the forums page...this may help get it rolling along.

I think Charles has put a link on the main page of the PC Guide. We should see things pick up before long, it will take some time to get it off the ground. I figured it would be a bit slow at first, and we also need to set a specific time to get together, once everyone knows about it and gets set up to use IRC. Until then, it will be sporadic, but popping in now and then is a good idea, no telling when someone may be there, and it gives you a chance to get familiar with using IRC.

Firewalls are no major problem, Zone Alarm gives me no trouble using mIRC, I just set it to allow mIRC to connect and checked the "don't ask again" box. Works fine. Black Ice worked well when I used it too.

As for the suggestion for "Paleo Pete's Computer whatever Hour" I suppose that would be ok, I could come up with some good info, and have the books to refer to if I need to make sure I get the right info across. Again a certain time would have to be set up, and we'll have to take the different time zones into account. About 7PM central would be ok with me, that would make it 8PM east coast, hopefully that wouldn't be too late. Any earlier may make it too early on the west coast, we'll have to see.

One thing that keeps happening is that even when I am around, I am not staring at that IRC screen. I come in and find someone has entered and immediately left. Be patient, folks. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Actually, I am going to set up a script to auto-greet people when I am around, telling them to msg me.
Also, I envisioned the chat room as being a place to mostly meet and socialize. If people want to hang around to volunteer to help people, great! I've done that a few times so far. But I wouldn't want anyone to feel obligated to do that. I don't want it to be a chore.

Something is going wacko with the java client, it's been kicking people off all day it seems. I just tried it, seemed to log on and with mIRC I could see my java nick logged on but the window wouldn't work. Had to use the 3 finger salute to shut it down, got a "Not Responding" message.

If you have been having trouble with it try downloading mIRC, it seems to be working fine, it's not a large file and isn't difficult to use. Charles put the download link on the main page, check there.

I have no idea what the problem is, it's something with the java client, and that's out of my league. Hopefully we can get it straightened out and get some use out of the channel before long. I'll try to be on for a while in the morning, and will check the java client again and see if it's still acting up.
