I used to teach guitar at one time.. (many..many years ago)..

Sadly, arthritis has put paid to my playing days as my hands/fingers seize up very painfully after about 10 minutes!!

My favourite music is BLUES..

Nothing sounds better than a well played electric guitar..;)

Both my daughters have been taking piano lessons for the six months or so and have gotten pretty good already. My oldest has taken a liking to the drums as well. She plays them way more than I do.

I agree, shame on me. I do regret that from time to time. I guess one is never too old to pick it back up again. kinda expensive though!

I picked up the clarinet in 4th grade, and after my first year moved to a new school. The band teacher was a joke, he sat around talking about his pec's with other teachers while giving us extensive lectures on how to assemble our instruments. One year of that and I was done.

First, I started learning guitar at 12yo with piano shortly afterwards. Picked up a bass guitar and amp at 15yo and have been playing bass primarily ever since with guitar a close second.

Quit a part time band last year because of one job, since that ended I was asked to join another but after my machinist schooling, the newer job put a stop to that a-g-a-i-n :(

Sufferwell,
I have 2 folk guitars (one with active pickups), a black Strat like the one in your pic (but a real Fender), 3 bass guitars: a headless Arbor Stiletto, a fretless Yamaha and a a white five string Fender Jazz Deluxe. Although I like the dynamics of the keys on a real piano, all I have for now is a Casio to keep my chops in somewhat shape. ;)

Fred,
Sorry about your arthritis (and personally I think Floyd is boring), but don't discourage your daughter about the fiddle (violin). It is a fantastic instrument. Coming from a very musically inclined extended family, I have about 4 to 6 fiddle player relatives, some almost world class. Dig her up some Bluegrass to listen to and learn...

BTW, where's Paleo Pete?
He's a musician through and through!

I play the flute and clarinet and I also sing. I am in a community choral group that is so much fun. We do 3 shows, Summer show, Christmas show and one that is called the Snowbird Serenade which are for the northerners who come down here in the Fall. It is alot of hard work, we only have 9 rehersals to learn all of the music but all of us in the choral are experienced singers and it doesn't take long to get everything together. I would die without my music. I love jazz, classical, the blues, I love the group Boston and we saw them in biloxi a couple of years ago, what a treat that was. :D

FTT, I am not a big fan of Fender but I have played some real Strat's and they are very nice. I am however a big fan of the old Fender amps. I had an old friend that had a vintage Twin Reverb and totally loved it.

My electric is a Peavey EVH Wolfgang Special. My acoustic is a very nice Alvarez. I play the Alvarez probably 70% of the time. It just sounds so good it inspires you to play. :D There's nothing like a good acoustic. ;)

Last Christmas we knew the our girls were going to begin taking lessons piano before too long, so we went around looking for a decent keyboard so they could practice. We happen to be at Sam's Club and seen they had some KB's so we took a look and seen one that was $200. I didn't even realize it was a full 88 key board or even mess with the electronics. I turned it on and hit a few keys and was surprised how good it sounded for a $200 KB. So we throw it in our cart, get to checkout and they say that will be $650 please. Well after waiting around for about ten minutes they came back and said it was mis-marked and actually cost $600, but since it was mis-marked they are going to give it to us for the marked price of $198. Woohoo! I knew it sounded way to good for $200. :D  The $200 one was the one below it that sounded like crap.

Jlreich, that is so cool!! Say, did you ever sing in any renaissance groups? I love your cape/gown site! In highschool I sang in a group called Minnesingers, we sang renaissance music and even sang at a renaissance fair. That was a riot! I got to wear a beautiful red renaissance gown with the long flowing sleeves and even got to wear a cone hat!

I used to be a church organist. I really liked shaking the rafters with Widor or Karg-elert. After I left, the church has a surveyor in who found that the entire roof was on the point of collapse!

I play the piano and the clarinet. I much prefer the piano though, but I like to still play the cliarinet once in a while. It really relieves stress playing an instrument.

HAHAHAHA...

The good Lord my Creator has seen fit to make me the butt of a very cruel joke by giving me the enthusiasm and love to sing but not the talent to do so!

I seem to be able to carry a tune within my vocal range and my wife says I can sing fairly well. My wife must really love me. They say love is blind, but, does that also apply to hearing or lack thereof? :D

::laughs:: no one else has listed either of the instruments I have played yet....

I played Accordion and Trumpet (well, Cornet, actually, but since they didn't have cornet parts in high school, they just gave me trumpet parts....). Of course, I dont' have enough time to keep up with either...Accordion is not a popular instrument-and therefore it is hard to find an audience-and trumpet is hard to play alone-you need a band along with to really make music with it.

I also sing in a choir, and occasionally get to enjoy a duet with my wife, backed by the choir. that's a nice feeling.

I've been thinking of taking up basic background guitar, so my wife and I could actually perform without having to rely on other people...I have a good spanish style acoustic guitar from my grandmother, so I was trying to find a good tutorial on chords...anyone know of any free sites I could find some info?

He's a musician through and through!

Right here...had to take a break - long one it turned out - got real burned out for a while, personal problems, and so forth...still not posting much, I browse around a bit now and then but I just had to chime in here, after all it is about music...

But yeah, as FTT noted I'm a musician, I play guitar, bass, sax, drums, keyboards (not very well), a little mandolin, learning flute (yes you can still learn an instrument even if you're over 50) and played everything in the band room in high school, except oboe and bassoon, the double reeds were too expensive. Also a good vocalist, been playing and singing in bands for over 30 years. Mostly rock and blues, I've [played just about everything over the years, rock, blues, country, disco, cajun, 50's, even a polka here and there.

Present instrument list...

Guitars:
Fender Squier strat, the one in my avatar, been abusing it 10-12 years now
Peavey Patriot (http://www.guitarstudiousa.com/Products/Vintage/peavey_patriot.htm)been abusing it almost 15 years, mine is black
Harmony Bobkat made April 1, 1966 Bobkat (http://demont.net/harmony/model.php?modele=H14) got it in about 1995 for $2 at a yard sale in San Antonio, it's the tobacco sunburst
Washburn BT2 (http://www.guitar.com.au/guitars/electric/washburn/BT2qvs.htm) mine is blue
Cort CL 1500 one pictured at Tonefrenzy (http://www.tonefrenzy.com/effects/Cort_CL_1500.html) quickly becoming my favorite guitar
Takamine G-2 series EGS 330SC electric/acoustic
2 no name telecaster copies usually tuned to open tunings for slide
Electromuse lap steel vintage 1945-47 usually open G tuning all original except for the cord and tuning keys. See one Here (http://www.robwesley.com/guitars/listings/Electromuse%20Lap-steel%201940's/) it was given to me by a close friend and the finish is just about worn off.

Amps:
Fender Super Reverb (1973) Raunch 'n roll deluxe!!
Fender Champ (1974) greatest practice amp ever made
Peavey MX mid 80's cleanest amp I've ever played
Kustom 2x12 rolled and pleated cabinet (1967 model) which I plug the Peavey MX into
Peavey Classic not working
Harmony model 4080 not sure how old

Wind/other:
2 xylophones
antique german mandolin
Artley flute
King Cleveland alto sax early 70's
Conn tenor sax mid 70's school horn (pads finally started crumbling and it bit the dust, not worth re-padding, sounded like crap anyway)
Wurlitzer electric piano (mid 70's)
Maas-Rowe Carillon not working as of yet, made about 1950-55
Old ukelele I'm currently rebuilding and a broken Epiphone FT 120, collecting parts now to build an electric using the neck from it.

And constantly looking at guitars, of course...

I think that's a complete inventory...not including microphones, stands, effects pedals, slide bars and bottles, that sort of thing...

Couple of things here to respond to.

Guitar chord charts:
This (http://www.8notes.com/guitar_chord_chart/) is one of the nicest chord charts I've seen so far. Google for "guitar chord chart" and you'll be able to find lots more.

Arthritis:
I've had some trouble similar to arthritis, fortunately not in the finger joints just yet. I found out something really interesting. Powdered chicken (or shark) cartilage, one teaspoon a day in a glass of orange juice. The pharmaceutical companies don't want you to know about hits, then you wouldn't need their drugs and they'd make no MONEY...$10 or less for a bottle and whatever some orange juice costs, that's it. Arthritis drugs will cost you $100 per bottle or more. Do the math...and it does work.

At the time I couldn't raise my left arm even enough to put on a shirt, the pain in my shoulder was horrible. Putting on a shirt was so painful I'd break out in a sweat. Found out about research done a few years earlier, end of the line arthritis patients were tested with chicken cartilage, one teaspoon per day, and after 3 months most of them could open a new pickle jar. We're talking about people who the doctors gave up on, it was joint replacement surgery or live with it.

So I tried it, found some powdered shark cartilage at a health food store. It's been nearly 10 years and I still have no trouble wiht that shoulder at all, and i quit taking it not long after the pain stopped. If I ever have trouble with finger joints, I'll be looking for more of it.
