I would like to know if finding and loading drivers for new hardware is
easier with WinMe or Win2000? It is a royal pain with 98!!!

Hi Onyxx,
Thanks for the kind words in your other posting, appreciate it.
I am not really sure of the answer to your question. It's a good one, and seems like more of a "how to" than a site suggestion (unless I misunderstand) so I am going to transfer this topic there. Thanks and welcome to the forums!

Windows Me is the best for loading drivers into a system. If you have a disk that has a driver on it, Me searches every folder on the cd until it finds the driver. While Me's windows drivers don't work that particularly great, they seem to have more supported software than 98 as far as things it recognizes without you installing manufacturers drivers. Win2000 is upgrade to windows NT, which is business type os that doesn't run games worth a crap, many don't work at all. I like winME, but we are gonna probably discuss that until the sun doesn't shine http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

I wish to note that there is only one game that I have not been able to get up & running under Windows 2000, and that is Half-Life. It could be because I'm running an evaluation copy of Win2K, but I dunno...anyway, there is anecdotal evidence that Half-Life can be made to run under Win2K, but I can't make it happen.

Of course, I guess I should admit that I had to edit the registry to get some games working...and I had to defrag my drive and do several installs to get still others working...but they work!!

Last, IMHO, you'll NEVER want to use the default drivers that come with ANY OS. Hell, with some products (read: video cards), you're not even going to want to use the drivers that come from the manufacturer! As far as AVAILABILITY of drivers, you're better off with 98--there are a number of applications (I know for certain), and thus, presumably, hardware, which require patches to run on ME. 98 has been around for...well, a couple of years (duh), and is less likely to have any issues...for now...

Dude, if I have an os that doesn't run Half Life, it won't come anywhere near my main computers. True, I run windows NT, but only on my login server, and true I have commodore 64's, but that is like, not the issue. Half Life is the the best game you can install on a computer.

You are right thought, 98 has the best overall driver availability, but it is easier to get the driver installed on windows Me.
