View Full Version : Diversity antennas...can I do this?

I have a Linksys WAP54G. Its a pretty simple wireless access point.
It has dual antennas with the option to use either left, right or diversity.

My understanding of diversity and how it works is that initially the WAP54G will look for signals from both antenna. Then it will only use the antenna with the stronger signal and ignore the other one.
Also it may only actually transmit on one antenna, but receive on both.

My question is.... can I disconnect one of the built in antennas and run a long-ish (8 - 12 meters approx) cable to the other end of my house where I get a weaker wi-fi signal and attach a high gain antenna?

I really don't fully understand how diverse antenna stuff works. No idea if the two antenna have to be close to each other or not.
If the two antenna can function independently, eg both receive and transmit then I can't see any reason why this would not work.

I have done a fair bit of searching and I can find no information about doing this. Which leads me to believe that its probably not going to work.

Any info or help before I go and buy a big length of cable and an antenna would be great. Thanks.

Linksys sells replacement high-gain antenna sets that are FCC approved.

Any antenna design you make yourself must be tuned to perform properly or the SWR will reduce any performance gains. SWR = Standing Wave Ratio

You may get more bang for the buck by simply moving the router/WAP to a better position in the desired coverage area.
Some aftermarket firmware also boosts the range of these routers.

Do be careful in boosting the range if you are not using good security on the wireless, you will be spreading your connection over a wider area.

The longer the cable the more loss you have. So the short answer is it probably will not help you at all.
