Hi Guys

When the system has been left idle for a while the system freezes up. Have looked at the power management thinking the problem may be there but the only thing I have set up in PM is Monitor Off after 1 Hour. Usual applications running when lock up occurs are ProbeII (mobo temp & voltage monitor) and Internet Explorer (v.7 I think).

Once system locked up the only thing that will unlock it is the reset button. ProbeII still reporting temps etc, IE7 wont minimize or close, taskmgr wont open. All temps being reported by probeII suggest system is running idle with cpu and mobo below 30c and voltages supplied by PSU looking normal. ALT + TAB will appear but wont change the program running which makes me think its an application hang rather than a CPU problem, however as I said, it ony happens when system left idle for a period of time and has only been happening last 3 days - note no software/hardware added during that time and no settings have been changed during that time. Only thing I've done with system during the last 3 days is a defrag.

Grateful for your input on this.

Try running a file system check on all the volumes. Also try turning off the temp monitor - I've had problems on a few systems with temp monitors running for extremely long periods of time (hours upon hours of idleness).

Hi;

I actually do try to not smoke whilst near the PC for fear of all the smoke being sucked up by the fans. However, this is definitely NOT the cause of this problem - I have more LED fans on this system than lightbulbs in my house - for those of you in the UK, I'm sure you've all heard of Blackpool Illuminations lol

However, I have just posted in another thread that damaged files have suddenly appeared in my recycling box including the anti-virus software.

Will run ChkDisc..... something new to try - never ran it before... OMG - how do I do that, [I][dies of embarrassment], [I] cant find it on start menu so is there a run command?

My PC has actually stopped locking up for the time being... strange!

To run chkdsk within Windows...

1. Go to "Start->Run->Open", type cmd and click the "OK" button.

2. When the cmd window runs...
Type chkdsk c: at the prompt and hit the "Enter" key.

3. To fix errors if any were found [on C:]...
In the cmd window type chkdsk c: /f [at the prompt and hit the "Enter" key] to fix errors found.
