Hello all:
I am in the process of learning about the guts of my PC and needed to know about:
-> the different colors of the PCI slots and the diferences between the slots and colors.
I really have no further info to give you because I have no clue about what the slots mean http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/confused.gif

Are slots the same as sockets??

Thanks to all who reply

PCI slots are all one color, usually white. If you see longer black slots, those are ISA slots.

Sockets are square, such as the CPU socket, or small and rectangular, but those you normally don't have to tinker with. Those would be the CMOS chips, cache chips, and ROM chips. To see what one looks like, the CMOS chip will be about 1 1/4" long and 3/4" wide, sometimes in a socket, sometimes soldered onto the board. ROM chips are mostly about 1 1/4" long and 3/8" wide.

Slots are long and rectangular with a contact slot in the middle where periferal cards are plugged in, such as the PCI/ISA slots referred to above. Memory (RAM) chips also plug into slots, designed a bit different, with clips to hold the chips in place. 72 pin slots are white, 168 pin DIMM slots are usually black, and a bit longer.

I don't have any links handy with pictures but you can take a look through my site, posted below, one of the links there might have some, and you'll also find lots of good info pertaining to building your own computer.

Just to cover another one ... AGP slots look like they have LOADS of pins and are split into 3 parts (I think they are green tho I am actually colour blind).

You would use this for a VERY fast graphics card, used mainly for Games.
