I have been using an Old IDE to USB adapter ( from an old external case) for many months
It is great to hook up to a drive without having to remove it from a case
Then add missing files or scan or even backup data files
It has saved me a lot of hours of extra work
Till I found one of these at a Local VAR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812197004
The company makes 3 models

I did a data recovery this weekend on an Old HP with an 80 gig ide
saving almost all the data to my laptop with no hassles at all
( almost because the drive was failing and would give an I/O error )
Then moving it to the new drive after replacing the old drive with a new 160Gig
The power supply for this unit powers the drive or drives So there is no need to use the system power supply
The power supply is not as large as some reviewers complain about on Newegg reviews of it's sister unit the

It is smaller than some laptop power supplies
But it works great
Powering up an 2.5 ide and a 3.5 sata drive at the same time with no hassles
It is now a permanent part of my tool kit for servicing systems away from home
Well worth the $25 to $30 ( $30 Local Var price) I paid
