Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
A clue: if you want to know if Macs are good, it is probably not very effective to ask that question in a PC forum... The reason most of us come here is that we use PCs, not Macs...
Also, it probably depends more on how much money you want to spend and what you want your image to be than what you want to do... Both PCs and Macs can do most of the same things, but Macs will cost more...

Most Macs cost 1000 or more (Macbook is the Cheapest at $1099 NEW) (mac MINI has no keyboard or mouse or monitor and is 599)

The guy your mom knows is either selling fakes, stolen machines, used machines or some variation along those lines... You do no find fully warranted new Mac laptops for $300...
And again, this is a PC forum, so you are unlikely to find many rabid Mac fans here...

your best bet is to buy a brand new computer
You can get an ACER NEW pretty cheap (desktop)- around $300
Desktops cost less and are more expandable and upgradeable, etc (however, you need to buy a monitor- keyboards, mice and speakers usually come with the desktop)
Laptops cost more (usually about double to what a comparable Desktop costs) and are not as expandable or as upgradeable as a desktop

An old 12" iBook?? Haha! :p Those things are old! G4 CPU, SDRAM/DDR RAM, etc. Not the best performance. They hold up pretty well, though. You do need a lot of RAM to run OS X on those things, but the learning curve from Windows is really high. And if you want to run any games beyond online Java-based stuff, you'll run into a slight problem there without Windows! :p
So are you seriously on such a tight budget that you can't afford new?? What's the deal with that? Why do you need your own laptop at 13-years of age? I mean, I know you'd probably love one! :D Don't we all! But why settle for paying a few hundred bucks on a used junkie? Especially since laptops rely so heavily on a good long warranty that covers accidental damage. With a used one, you're not covered at all if you tip it the wrong way and it dies after two months. Think about that. Accidents happen all the time with portable electronics.
