No Audio Device!!!

I have a problem with the sound on my computer. The volume control has disappeared from the desktop tray icons. In the volume tab in sounds and audio devices I get a notice saying "NO AUDIO DEVICE" with the everything else greyed out. All drivers are up to date and working according to device manager. Even called up the help desk and they installed a realtek driver...but still no sound...Ive gone on a lot of forums and tried many of the solutions but nothing has worked so far.

I own a emachine w series. Model W4682 2.60 GHz Intel Pentium 4

For some reason I believe that there is something wrong with the hardware.Unfortunately I am not that great with computers,especially hardware. I am not sure if I have a sound card installed or if its integrated sound. I dont want to do a system restore and any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I cant live without sound anymore!!!

We need more details...

Version of Windows, make/model of computer, etc...

That Unimodem device IS NOT your sound card! So whether or not its drivers are there and working is immaterial to you problem. We need to know if your machine has a real sound card or has onboard audio...so as many details about your machine as possible are needed.

hey guys thanks for all the help...sorry I was out of town and couldnt reply to your posts...

realtek is not listed under sound video and game controllers in device manager even though i installed it

heres whats listed

All of them are functioning properly according to the computer

After running the Direct x diagnostic i got these error mssgs for sound

DirectSound test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectSoundCreate): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

DirectMusic test results: Failure at step 6 (Activating the IDirectMusicPort): HRESULT = 0x8878000a (The request failed because DirectSound resources, such as the priority level, were already in use by another caller.)

I also dl and installed the driver saphalline recommended but that didnt work either

Sounds like we're getting closer to a hardware problem here. To be certain it isn't just a messed up Windows configuration, though, the next diagnostic step would be a total system wipe & restore - start over using the recovery disks. I've seen a fresh install fix all sorts of driver problems before.

The question is: Can you do that? Do you have all your data backed-up? Do you have all the installation CD's, DVD's, and executables for your programs?

:confused: So i decided to do a system restore. I got a external harddrive(usb conncetions) and tried transfer files to it. However the drive was not showing up in My computer or explorer. It was showing up in device manager and all that but i couldnt find a place to open it. So i backed up any files i could on cd's (theres was too much multimedia to burn) and restored the system.

Unfortunately the problem persists. I havent updated anything so or installed new drivers because i wanted opinions from you guys. Thanks again. :confused:

1. Go into "Device Manager"...
Display devices "By Connection" and expand the tree [highlight the PC icon at the top then hit "Numlock + *" then "Numlock" again].

2. Look under "PCI Bus" for either "Unknown Devices", or sound devices.
Which are there?
Is all looking good or are there any problem devices?
