I have a question for you which I am having difficulty finding an answer
for. I recently installed an efficient speedstream 3060 internal DSL
modem. I also have a NetGear 310 Nic card installed. Both cards are
bussmastering on the PCI. If I have the Nic and modem installed in
adjacent PCI slots the computer will not recognize that the modem is
installed but the Nic card will function OK. No conflicts show up in
Device manager. If I have them installed in non adjacent slots things
are OK. My question to you is WHY?
No one seems to have a logical answer.

I wish I had known the right (logical) answer, but instead I have to quote (http://www.resnet.bris.ac.uk/docs/pci.html) 3COM:

Depending on your computer, not all PCI slots may be bus mastering slots. It is difficult to tell which slots are bus mastering and which aren't, the only way to tell for certain is to check the manual for your computer or motherboard. However, in general, try not to use the PCI slot adjacent to the ISA slots as this is often a shared slot that does not support bus mastering. If the card doesn't work properly in the first slot you try, move it to another slot and try again.
