I had been trying to solve this one for some time now.

My brother-in-law brought a laptop with him and asked me to look into it.

The laptop is a Dell inspiron 1200 with an Intel Celeron M processor.

The problem is, Windows XP home doesn't boot. Once you turn it on, it runs the POST normally. Windows XP logo shows then boom ! Chkdsk runs saying that the volume is dirty. It runs the 3 level check OK. Then windows logo shows again. then chkdsk again saying that volume is dirty.

It goes into this process forever.

Im confused. chkdsk doesn't return any error saying it failed the check.

I learned that you can reset the dirty bit by using fsutil.exe but the program doesn't work with DOS. I can't boot into windows neither so Im stuck.

I don't have an XP disc too so I haven't tried using that.

any suggestions where to start?

A Bart's PE disk would be a good choice, but since you don't have an XP disk it is hard to make one...

thanks a lot MJC

I was able to make the bootdisc. I tried it and I was able to run fsutil.

Unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem.

after running c:\>fsutil dirty query c: , it returned Driver C is NOT Dirty. But if you restart it, chkdsk says its dirty

Is C FAT or NTFS? If the former you could try converting it to NTFS. After you have an NTFS partition try running chkdsk /R from a command prompt and follow the prompts it gives you. Going from FAT to NTFS is to all intents and purposes a one way process. If any doubts or if there is important data involved backup any data first.

been very busy this past few days. I'll see if I can find time to deal with this week then I'll post back again. : )

BTW, I think the partition is NTFS. I needed

and I think I remember I already ran the chkdsk /R. The results looks fine. No Errors or anything. Just the reports on the files size, available etc.

finally.

I was able to get rid of the problem by doing a repair with a Windows XP Home CD.

Waiting for the disc took longer than actually running repair
