If it's external HDDs we're talking about, I wouldn't recommend the Lacie brand, granted I have not used a Lacie before, but there are more well-known/tested brands out there. Like Western Digital or Seagate, for example. The way external drives are priced it's pretty competitive so it wouldn't be hard to find a similar drive at the same price, or better, by either of those two companies.
Here's two WDs for instance:
250GB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136022
320GB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136023
And a Seagate for good measure:
250GB (now at $79.99 sale) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148233

LaCie devices tend to die prematurely, as far as I've observed. Granted my observations are not omnicient :p but the brand leaves a lot to be desired in the reliability category. However, this is not due to physical design issues, but rather the HDD's they choose to put inside their enclosures. They just pick cr@ppy hard drives! I don't know why!
My solution to the external hard drive need has been to "roll my own". Buy an enclosure, buy a separate internal HDD, and put them together! I recently picked up the Thermaltake Silver River Duo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145027) enclosure (model A2395 - silver) and I love it! Internal PATA and SATA, external USB 2.0 and eSATA, and cables (!), plus everything else you need (even a screwdriver!). I bought it for like $50 retail (it was an emergency) and even at that price it was worth it! Comes with all the cables you'll ever need for all the connections, which paid for itself right there! The cooling performance is, of course, quite excellent  and the build quality is top-notch. Sturdy yet easily disassembles for upgrades, swaps, whatever. And since it can take any HDD out there, you are not limited in any way.
So yeah, I prefer to customize every computer thing I own, even my external hard drives! :D But it all comes down to choice and options. If I can get something with those two things, I'm all for it!

Of course you do! *Jedi wave* Everyone needs back-ups! *Jedi wave* You'd be crazy not to back-up your sensitive data and downloaded programs and ISO's and such! *Jedi wave* Even if you don't need an external HDD, you do need some sort of external/off-site back-up method. *Jedi wave* I can guarantee you that! *Jedi wave*
