I was told today that Dos is no longer used. I found that to be a funny statement considering all Microsoft OSes are Dos Based. My question is what does the future hold for Dos, and can anybody ( In a nutshell of course ) describe the differences between Dos, and UNIX or point me in the direction of a site that details the two.

Thanks for all the help and information

DOS is certainly still in use, and as long as this old bald fart is around, it will remain in use http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

OK, seriously...Microsoft recently released Windows ME which does not run on DOS as win95 and 98 do. I'm not positive about Win2000, but I think it might not run on DOS either, but again, not sure there...ME has no command prompt to boot to, so trying to run scandisk in DOS is not possible, or other utilities that sometimes prove helpful in DOS.

UNIX I'm not familiar with at all, but maybe a bit of browsing will give you an idea what UNIX is and how it works.

UNIX Reference Desk (http://www.geek-girl.com/unix.html) bunch of links here.

UNIX vs NT Orginization (http://www.unix-vs-nt.org/) ???

UNIX® System (http://www.unix-systems.org/) apparently the UNIX homepage, I didn't browse through yet.

UNIX Services (http://wwwhost.cc.utexas.edu/cc/services/unix/index.html) from the University of Texas has tons of links to UNIX info and resources.

Windows NT4 and 2000 are not based on DOS. NT4 (I can't speak for 2000) has a DOS 'emulator' that allow you to run DOS commands and applications, but the operating system (OS) does not depend on it as in Windows 9X.

Unix -- the Linux flavour I'm familiar with -- is a true multi-user OS, as opposed to all DOS and Windows variants. (Yes, some people will say that Windows is a multi-user OS because you can log in with different usernames, but try running eight separate, simultaneous sessions from the same terminal!)

Unix is *way* more powerful and flexible than DOS in terms of what you can do from a command prompt, or program into a script. In comparison, DOS is an amoeba while Unix is a highly-developed, multicelled organism http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi
I would have to just say the only similiarities is that they are both operating systems and that DOS borrowed many ideas from Unix for its CLI...such as names of commands.

Yes, Unix is undeniably more robust than DOS.

You will not find many/any articles comparing the two because they are almost night and day.
Just read about both and make your own comparisons. Laters...

Not a comparison, but this might be of interest: http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/DOS-Win-to-Linux-HOWTO.html
