Bundled software

Do bundled software that come with optical drives only work with that drive? There is DVD ROM optical drive on sale at the local store that lists PowerDVD 6 as the bundled software. It's only $20. I don't need the drive but would like to use the software with my current, but different brand, DVD R/W drive. Would the software work with another brand optical drive?

I'll second mjc's vote of "maybe" and add that it may not be the full retail software (some disabled features, limited functionality even with the drive it was sold with, etc.).

IMO, the risk of it not working is not worth the cost. Unless you need a spare optical drive laying around, which would be nice.

But overall, the OEM software that comes with an optical drive or vid card or whatever is tied to that piece of hardware. I've tried to port OEM bundled software over to other hardware before and the results are never pretty.
