My son who is in another part of the country has a Gateway PC and has Cable ISP.He has XP SP2 and Shaw is the cable company. The Modem is an SB5101 Motorola Cable Modem. The PC is currently located on the second floor of his house but he is thinking about relocating it.

He would like to install a Router in the basement and be able to make am internet connection wirelessly from more than one computer in his house. The PC's could be located on the 1st and 2nd floors. Perhaps he would need a Modem/Router combo??

Does he have a feasable plan?

What would he need?

Your comments please.

Thank you.

He just needs a home wireless router.
I prefer the Linksys brand but Netgear will also do the job as well.
He can keep the router with the PC (wired) or he can connect another PC/notebook to the router (wired), and then add a wireless adapter to any additional PCs.
Internet>Modem>Router>PCs

Wireless reception depends on the construction of the building and other environmental factors.

Depending on the construction of the building, it may be better to consider running cat-5 wire and connecting wirelessly. Wired is faster and more secure.

The real issue I have with wireless and I use it is, they are changing the specs for the next version of wireless called N. We are presently on G. N will be faster but the standard is not set. You run the risk of buying pre-N and having not be standard or buying old technology...
