Hello All,
I was using a Linksys WRT54G router with my network (all Linksys products). The Linksys router went 'South' so I substituted a Belkin N1 router and N1 notebook card that someone gave me.
With my original setup I used a Linksys WUSB54GC wireless adapter with my PC in the garage.
Now with my present setup (Belkin N1 router and notebook card) I have network with my laptop and wired PC but I am unable to get connected in the garage with the WUSB54GC.
Can this setup work or is there a compatibility issue between the N1(Belkin) and the 54g(Linksys)?
I'm trying to avoid purchasing an N1 adapter for the garage PC.
Any help in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Kindest regards,
Karlev

Sounds as if your Wireless Mode Switch is set to 802.11n only. Set the switch to 802.11n & 802.11g.

Hello,
Thanks for your speedy reply.
The wireless mode switch was already on B/G and N. No other option is available.
I still have the problem.

My guess is that you need to configure the Linksys to match the settings of the Belkin. Are you running any type of security?

This is from Your Belkin Manual (http://www.belkin.com/support/dl/F5D8231-4v1_manual.pdf) on page 44.
2) 40MHz only. Setting the Router to this mode allows only 40MHz operation. This mode is compatible only with N1, draft 802.11n-compliant devices. It may affect legacy 802.11b/g devices. Use only when you have a pure N1, draft 802.11n wireless network.
Make sure this switch is set to 20MHz/40MHz-Auto.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
The mode is set to 20/40MHz and I still have the problem.
Also I'm not using any security.
I noticed when I enable security my laptop which is about 3 feet away from the router loses connection.
Kindest regards,
karlev

Hi Karlev
I dont know if this is any help to you, but you must connect with an ethernet cable first to set up wireless security on the routers webpage. I found to my cost that if you try it wirelessly the connection fails as soon as you try to save the changes. See my post of 7th Sept for further information.

Linksys always had me ethernet cable connect my main computer to the router to configure it for usage. I would suggest sassie's link to the manual and perhaps look at setting up things anew...

What I would suggest at this point is contacting either Belkin or Linksys tech-support. Linksys tech-support has proven itself time after time with me, solving every problem I've had. I'm not sure if the situation becomes confounded with two different manufacturers, but I would think Linksys might be your best bet. If they don't provide the solution I would give Belkin a shot...as you've chosen to go with them over Linksys with the new router. Here's there chance to shine...
Actually, this is really looking like a classic example of why NOT to use different brands of 'experimental' or 'beta' equipment.
ALL wireless-N gear currently on the market is not the final version...so it is experimental.
So at this point, I'd say that yes, there is a chance (about 50% or so) that there is a compatibility problem between them...
Are there any signs of 'life' on the garage PC connection at all?
Have you tried to assign it a static IP on the Belkin router? And do the same, with the same IP on the garage computer?
USB adapters still, at least to me, fall in the 'beta' category...

Not only that, but right now the n-wireless standard is on hold for standardization because of the failure of a patent holder to send a letter releasing the standards organization from a possible lawsuit.

All the outfits who made these can wind up in court too.
Shades of the Rambus debacle.

I would also refer to mjc Actually, this is really looking like a classic example of why NOT to use different brands...Period! If you're in need of a company's tech-support personnel. I doubt any company is going to be comfortable instructing how to set-up another company's product....
