Just bought new processor: AMD K6-2 with 3D NOW! 500MHz. Installed it and it only shows up as 183MHz. What the *&^%$??? How do I get it to work at the correct speed or How do I get the system to recognize it as what it is?
System Configuration:
EPoX EP-5BPVXB Motherboard (expandable) with latest bios flash and chipset drivers
64 MB RAM
Windows 98; clean install
Let me know what other information you require. Please help. Thanks. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hey
The PCGuide and many sites have walk-thrus on how to setup a pc, so i am not going to give you a step by step. Feel free to ask specific questions tho.
First off i suggest you read thru your MB manual and make sure it supports the K6-2.
If so then you need to make sure the following settings are as so:
FSB(front side bus) set to 100MHz
Clock Multiplier set to 5.0
Core Voltage set 2.2 - warning - look on your cpu for voltage dont take my word for it.
Generally the jumpers have the settings silk screened near them. Laters...

Thanks Chad for the reminder about the on-line guide. It helped me to change the jumpers to the "almost" correct mode. I guess my mobo doesn't support 500MHz processors because all the cpu's listed in the manual use 66MHz or (1) uses 75MHz. I set the jumpers according to the manual for a K6-2 processor and now it is registering 333MHz. A considerable difference from the 183MHz I was getting.
Question: where and what is the "front side bus?" I looked for this in my manual and found nothing. Also, the "clock multiplier", where would I find that? Is this a different procedure than what I did? Just wanted to know if there was more I could do to speed this baby up. Oh, and the voltage is 2.2. Thanks, Chad. Have a good day! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

The front side bus is the system bus, and the multiplier is the ratio of the CPU speed to the bus speed. I believe for a K6-2 500, the bus speed is 100 MHz and the multiplier is 5.
If you haven't already, check for a BIOS upgrade for your motherboard, and/or info on their web site about possible support for the 500 MHz chip.

I contacted my mobo manufacturer and, unforturnately, it doesn't support this fast of a processor. But at least it's faster than it was. Thanks for all the help, guys!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
