Hello,

I don't know if my CDROM is died ...

Last week I tried to install Office pro 97 on my computer. While the install was running the computer crashed.

Since this time I can't use the CDROM. Sometimes the BIOS won't detect it, but after some trials it want. I checked the drivers in config.sys, there is no problem. When I use the W98SE bootdisk, all drivers are correctly installed, I can switch to the CDROM letter "D:". But I can't read anything with it, I become the message CDR101. I tried to clean the laser by inserting a cleaning CD, but I can't run the programm. But that's not the matter I think because when I put the CD in, it makes some turns ...

Sometimes I became a message by booting which tell ATAPI uncompatible.

I become the same message when I connect the Cable on the 2nd IDE with nothing.

I remove all the components from the computer, I used the standard BIOS value, but nothing changes.

One time I was under W98 and could access the CDROM for 2 Minutes. I tried to install the drivers utilities for my Intel chipset and the computer crash another time ... and my CDROM won't read something.

What a Quest !

I'm running out of idea. I used this CDROM since 6 months ...

May I have to buy a new one ? Could it be a IRQ problem. (I'm using PnP setting, I always used it) ?

Thanks
Raf

Sounds like you might have a bad CDROM. There is an outside chance your CD ROM cable could be bad, check the pins on the cdrom where the cable plugs in and make sure none are bent. Otherwise, probably need a new CDROM.
