My first thought was bad battery.

did you install a new RAM module?

Been having major problems with this system all week. It started with a bad sector just past my MBR partition on the C Drive. Have reinstalled it about 15 times in the past 10 days which has (I think) turned out to be a useless, unstable and incompatible new bios update from Asus (08.02) - Well I thought if I was going to have to do a total reinstall I might aswell update the bios and nVidia drivers.

It always seems fine when I go to bed, even after several reboots to check it's working, but the next morning something is always seriously wrong, alot of the time causing total boot failure.

I put a new battery in the other day to see if that would sort out some of the issues and I think you may be right David, perhaps I replaced it with another bad battery so I have been out and bought another battery today and replaced it yet again.

However, I thought the battery would only come into play when the power supply was actually disconnected - Can anyone clarify?

Guess I will find out in the morning - lol

This may be a bit premature, but I say the mobo is bad. Might not be a bad idea to start looking into the return/RMA process now.

Oh Saph.... Ouch - That hurt!!!

I cant really remember but I think this mobo is over 12 months old now so I assume its past its RMA date????

It has booted fine this morning and all seemed well until I tried to download a file - As soon as the download started the PC switched off instantly.

Windows rebooted with a 'driver caused this problem' error message but didnt say what driver?

I just dont get it - Until last week this was the most stable, unstoppable system I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Windows rebooted with a 'driver caused this problem' error message but didnt say what driver? The symptoms are becoming less and less consistent. You can check the temps for any overheating, but I doubt that would be the problem or you'd have figured it out by now. And since you've already reinstalled the OS several times, it's definitely not a software problem.

All in all, with multiple errors and strange behaviors such as this, it's likely to be a mobo problem.

I cant really remember but I think this mobo is over 12 months old now so I assume its past its RMA date????Not at all. Retail boxed mobo's come with a 3-year warranty by default from just about every manufacturer. Just go on their website and look up RMA/warranty procedures in the support section.

You know, it is starting to sound like some of the older boards with bad caps...many problems, but nothing really consistent so it could be pinned down to a specific subsystem. If there are no obvious signs of a bad capacitor (bulging, leaking or discolored caps) it could be a bad solder joint.

True. It could be something weird like oozed-out thermal grease touching the CPU pins or whatever. That would be related to a mobo problem and cause the same results without actually being a mobo problem.
