Excuse me, but I couldn't find something helpful in the already answered questions.
Something very strange suddenly happened to my laptop. At startup of windows XP HE SP2, explorer.exe almost immediately goes up to 95-100% CPU usage. I tried process explorer and I found a thread consuming all that usage. It's the following: ntdll.dll rtlallocateheap+0x18c. Please, I'd be grateful to have your help, but try to be clear because I'm a beginner in the PC world. Thanks in advance!
I have an idea that it might have been caused by an activex influence after an internet surfing. But I don't Know how to resolve this.

The little I have been able to dig up on it seems to be pointing toward a Windows Automatic Update problem...try disabling AutoUpdate and see if that clears it up.

I disabled Automatic Updates in Security Center but the problem persists. This malfunction appeared after an adobe flash player 9 installation, an activex influence, and an effort to connect in Skype.
