Hi I have recently fitted an ide controller card I found out it to be a raid controller as I was installing it, I had to fit this card to allow me to fit my 20 gig drive which I recently purchased, my motherboard only supports drives upto 8.4 gig. was this my only option other than to change my motherboard ?

Depending upon which motherboard you have there may be a BIOS update available for it.

The motherboard is about 3 years old its the TX PRO-II,with a cyrixx PR-200 chip on it,128 mb ram (dimms) its one them onboard/sound/vga boards (pc chips I think)I know I am due for an upgrade but at present this will have to do me for now. I have attached a 4.8 gig hardrive sraight to the motherboard and attached the 20 gig hardrive to the controller card it all seems to work be I have found the machine now is a lot slower since I have used this setup, I have had a look in the properties in my computer/device manager and I have notice that there is a circled exclamation through the device PCI raid controller, I did install it so I am going to have to reinstall maybe this is the reason I am confused how if the message says the device isn't fitted I can read/write to this hardrive via the controller card.

If your 20 gig hard drive is working (even slow) then the card is physically installed correctly; however, it sounds like the DRIVERS for the card are not installed at all.....may want to read instructions that came with card on how to install the drivers.
