Ok, a friend of mine had a modem in the back of his computer. It has an in and out jack. I turned the computer on and plugged a phone to the modem. The Modem transfers the signal well. I could even dial out with the phone. But the computer doesn't seem to find the modem and the software that is installed says that it is installed incorrectly. Since the modem seems to be working, i assume since i can dial out, I'm not sure what to do. He doesn't have the software. I'm trying now to looking up a driver or some information on the internet.
Any suggestions as to what i should try?

I am not familiar with that particular modem (hopefully someone will come along to help with that) but the fact that you can dial out from the phone does not mean that the modem is working. The phone connection really bypasses the modem function and effectively works the same as if you plugged the phone into the wall jack.
the software that is installed says that it is installed incorrectly
Perhaps a review of the modem installation instructions would help.

It sounds like you need to get and install up-to-date drivers for the modem. Identifying the modem may be your first hurdle. First check device manager to see if it is identified or is an unknown device or unknown pci device or unknown communication device etc.
There is a good linux scanmodem tool (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto/ScanModem) that you could run from ubuntu to identify the modem but it doesnt work from windows. Unknown Device Identifier (http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html) might help from within windows if you cant get the information in other ways or from reading information (notably what is written on the little rectangular chipset) on the modem itself.
