View Full Version : Midtower cases and more than one CD-ROM

hi,
I have an ATX form factor midtower case with the option to put 3 (5.25) drives. I was thinking to build a system with a DVD-ROM and a CD-ROM RW. Now, I do not have the drives yet but measuring the size of the mobo I want to buy (ATX) and the size of a standard CD-ROM I realized that I can fit only one 5.25 drive on the upper slot of the case. The remaining two slots basically do not allow me to put anything else because the mobo is on the way and any 5.25 device would fit only if it overhangs outside the front of the case, something that is very bad looking. The question is: is this a common scenario when dealing with midtower cases or is mine that is a "cheap" one? would you say that if you want to install more than one 5.25 device you should go for a full tower instead?
thanks

Two CDROMs fit in my midtower. The lower one (in the middle of three drive bays, like yours) extends over the motherboard by an inch or so. There's about a quarter-inch clearance between the motherboard and the metal CD drive case, but to be sure I taped that edge of the drive case with electrical tape.

Check to see if the panel the motherboard fits on is removeable. It is especially handy to have a removeable panel in smaller cases when the drive bay case is in the way. Mount the motherboard to the panel, then put it in after the 5.25 drives are installed. As Sleddog said, the drives should overlap the mb with plenty of room.
