what should be the resolution settings for a monitor 19" widescreen lcd ? when i try 1088x612 or 960x600 you hardly can read. even the others settings are not too sharp. My old PC with the older monitor,{not lcd} is sharper. Can that be adjusted ? thanks. gefeiora

LCD displays work best at a "native resolution". Other resolutions distort the rendering of the pixels.
See Saphalline's explanation of LCD rendering in post 12 here:
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?p=270097&highlight=native+resolution#post270097
Check the Menu of your monitor and or the documentation
It should give you a default/native/best resolution setting
Most will warn you about settings for the monitor when you set t to something else.
You may have turned it off
It gets annoying at times
many 19" wide screens manufactures recommend 1440x900
if you find the text too small at that resolution
You can adjust the font size and make it easier to read

Can you check that monitor model, I am not getting a match on HP site.
The number on the monitor bezel may be all we need.
Here you go
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00739863&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3194520&lang=en
Found by using "PROD.N# P8740AA"
1440 x 900 factory-set resolution
Recommended resolution (H x V) 1440 x 900 @ 60 Hz

You should go here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3194520&lang=en&
and download the correct monitor drivers or INF file
This will allow your video card to know what it(LCD) supports
and then you should be able to set it correctly
