I LOST everything today. I got an error I couldn't recover from due to the fact that the person who built my pc installed XP Pro OVER windows 98.

I got these errors: command.com corrupted
c:\windows\himem.sys missing or corrupted

When I rebooted, Windows 98 splashscreen showed up!!



Anyway, I have downloaded AVG A/V and AVG Spyware

I need a popup blocker and a firewall

I also want to know if there is a safer browser

I want to continue to use Outlook Express

I got several errors relating to Windows 98 SE

I tried to type in 'command prompt only' at the C prompt. When I did I got the error that command.com was missing or corrupted. There were several others too; either missing or corrupted. one was DBLBUFF, I think. Another one was himem.sys. I lost the paper I wrote them down on.

I got it to boot to the splash screen and windows 98 was on the monitor.

It was a private build to my specs in Feb 2005

Windows XP Pro was supposed to be the ONLY OS installed, however they had problems reading the registration numbers and installed 98SE first. I told them to delete 98 clear the HD and install XP Pro.

The death knell today was a BSOD kernel_inpage_error. I have been getting this error on and off for several months. We ran scans, and tried to figure it out. The CPU was running @ 100% when IE was running. Anytime I played a game I bought that had been installed on the HD used 100% cpu.

I had no choice, I put the installation disk in and did a reformat and reinstall.

Yes it worked but I have had problems since day one. I couldn't use the DVD-ROM. I had problems using the cd-rom. I also had problems saving anything to a cd, even though I had the ability. Most of the time it wouldn't show up, or it would tell me that I didn't have access.

I also had to replace the power supply within 2 months of the build. I couldn't take it back or even talk to the person d/t the fact that they went out of business.

Anyway, I need all the securities back on my pc. I am getting ready to reinstall SP 2. I am trying to get it back to all safety stuff back in place.

I went to Budfred's links to get all his stuff and most of it was gone.

I couldn't find a firewall a pop up blocker, or anything else.

I have reinstalled AVG AV and AVG Anti-spyware

I need links to HOSTS programs that block in page ads, a firewall and anything else y'all recommend. Of course I am looking for GOOD FREE programs.
