Media player =/= widescreen?

Hey guys,

My brother got a new widescreen monitor, and Windows Media Player refuses to fill it. It will play movies in widescreen mode, but will not fill the screen, there are always black bars on all sides. If WMP can't fill the monitor, any suggestions for other free or nearly-free dvd playing programs?

Well, some more details, please...flavor of Windows, flavor of WMP, make/model of vid card, etc?

Oh sorry, it's XP, I believe it's WMP 11, and the card is a Raedon 9250 (if memory serves; I'm at work so I can't refer to the box ;)
