I don't have any problems with "Create a restore point" (or at least that's what I think), but I've never been able to "Restore my computer to an earlier time" using System Restore. It always starts the process, restarts windows, and when windows starts up again, it always tells me that it was unable to restore, and it just stays with the same settings. It doesn't matter which restore point I try to restore to, nor if I manually "Create a restore point" and then immediately afterwards try restore to that point, it'll always tell me that it was unable to restore to that point as it having Windows start up again.

How should I go about fixing this problem? Is it because of some sort of security settings on my computer?

Thanks in advance

When I try to use System Restore in XP, I click a date, but it tells me I cannot restore. How do I fix this?
A:
So, you're trying to use the XP System Restore feature, but get the message: "Cannot restore the computer to an earlier restore point, no changes have been made to your computer." Am I right? Well, I can't tell you how to get your old restore points back, but I can tell you how to fix this problem so you can use them in the future.
Right click on the My Computer icon, choose Properties, then click on the System Restore tab.
Put a check in the box for "Disable Restore on all drives." Click OK and reboot your computer.

After you reboot, go back to the System Restore tab and uncheck the box. Click OK.
Next, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then click System Restore. Choose Create a Restore Point and give it a name like Reset as a reminder.
Now, go ahead and try to use the restore again, using the new point and it should work properly for you this time

Hey thanks, that worked! I've been trying to get it to work for months.

Now I've found another problem, when I log into safe mode at Windows startup, system restore won't work under that, even if you hit "No" when the instructions say that you'll go to system restore when logging in as an administrator under safe mode. Is there a way to fix that?

run the repair,in the run box type
sfc /scannow
See if it works then

thanks again tom,

Now I can get it to work when I sign into my user name when I restart with Safe Mode. However, System Restore won't work if I sign into "Administrator". Is System Restore supposed to work under my user name login but not under Administrator when in Safe Mode?
