Alright i have an old RCA/HP System Link home networking kit.. Model # H950

it works beautifully from windows ME -> 95

but from Windows ME -> XP.. not so much..

my PC has Windows ME on it
My Newer Laptop has XP on it
(and my old, dead laptop had 95 on it)

So i install it on ME just fine.. but on XP, it keeps trying to use the built in hardware thing and not setup.exe

so i close the built in one and it just.. SITS there on the installing screen..

no cpu activity at all
CPU Idle is at 99%

if i go into the CD and install various parts of it, i can get the admin panel up.. but pc is not recognizing laptop.. and laptop isnt recognizing itself even..

any help? :3

Old might be the problem. Can you go into the device properties and set manually?
I did a couple quick searches on Google and HP and came up empty on this model number. Can you tell us more about the actual device (internal/external)? Have you checked manufacturer for XP drivers? What service pack on your XP?

http://salestores.com/rcah9wirhomn.html

thats a link to what it is.

Neither RCA or HP has ANYTHING about it..

the manufactor(??) inari has gone out of business i guess..

they are external connecting to USB or parrallel port.

then plug into the wall

apparently sends data over power lines

it says it works with windows 2000... but it doesnt with XP

if it works with 2000 shouldnt it also work with XP?

"Can you go into the device properties and set manually?"

you mean device manager?

also - its listed under USB and not network..

If i try to install it from the CD it either says

"cant install hardware
error occurred.

a service installation section in this INF is invalid

click finish to close

:("

Or.. if i hit install automatically, I have a choice between

C:\windows\inf\pportusb.inf (prolly cuz ive installed it like a bazillion times and that didnt get erased)
d:\winnt\pportusb.inf
d:\win9passport.inf

Im assuming pport in d drive is the best one but..

hold on gotta restart

errr for some reason the edit button is gone..

anyway

I tried some more stuff and got further than i did before... Then i got to the part where i select what folders to share and....

the instruction at 0x00a14b55 referenced memory at 0xd5b07eb2. The memory could not be "read" ok to terminate cancel to debug

it died *sob*

also..
if i run diagnostics it says

Server device driver: not loaded. Check the network adapters connections and restart windows.
Parallel/USB Driver: not loaded. Check the network adapters connections and restart windows.
NDIS Driver: not loaded. Check the network adapters connections and restart windows.

PC System Link: OK

....but if i look at systemlink in device manager it says the driver is installed and working properly.

Well, part of the problem is that if the company went belly-up before providing an updated/'logoed' set of XP drivers, XP won't recognize the device...it isn't on the hardware compatibility list by any chance?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314062

Generally, if an item isn't on the list, it isn't worth the effort to try and get it to work...and yes, XP 'broke' a lot of hardware.

What you are facing is the drivers for this thing are trying to do things/use memory locations that XP has allocated for something else.

Azalie, in a round about, nice sort of way, what mjc and I are trying to tell you is, buy new network hardware ;)

Yeah, it doesnt pass the windows... whatever it is.. certification of "working"

ummm

on driverguide there IS a 'patch' for windows XP.. its supposidly a 'limited admin console' thing for the product... but I can't get it to work either.... I install it and it says cant find syslink make sure its plugged in.

but it IS plugged in..

errr and why do you think i still have windows ME? XD I have no $$ to upgrade! this laptop was 200$.. and the screen like messes up at the bottom unless its at a certain angle and the AC wont recognize unless its at a certain angle.. but hey, it works for me!

...I did however see a wireless thing at a garage sale for 10$ ugh i wish i would have got that then but i didnt have this laptop then...

So im just trying to get these to work until i come across another wireless set :p

...or perhaps try to set up my 2 laptops so that one connects to the internet and sets up a home wifi spot.. and the other one just 'connects' but since it has Win2k i duno if i can do it... :x
