after i reinstalled xp. it is super slow. i check just about everything else. did a scan on the harddrive, scanned for viruses and adware, took it all apart and put it back together and made sure everything is connected correctly. i cant figure out why it takes 20 minutes to boot up. and when its ready, the programs take like 5 minutes to open.

Load and run a [chaos free, uninfected OS environment such as a] Linux distro like Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloading?release=desktop-newest&arch=i386&mirror=http%3A%2F%2Fubuntu.virginmedia.com%2Frelea ses%2F&debug=%5B%20country_US%20%2C+%20country_UK%20%2C+% 20continent_NA%20%5D&download-button=#8393365245104173362) or Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/get.php), and see whether the problem is still there.
If no longer there, it's probably a problem with the Windows software environment [or else your HDD, which isn't used when you load Linux from an optical disk].

If still there, there's probably something amiss with the hardware in use [doesn't include the HDD].

Sounds like you may be missing drivers...or you have something like Norton installed. Or it could just be that Windows update is trying to connect and update everything at once...

When you reinstalled XP, what version did you put on it? If it wasn't SP2, then you are in for a very long update process...if it will even do it without having to manually install SP2, first.
