Is this just a pop-up? or a bug?

to post a clearer picture:
use print screen, paste it to paint, upload the file to a free image hosting website (such as http://my.opera.com or image shack). and is the [ img ] tags with the direct URL of the picture (right click on the image and select "view picture")

that way, we will be able to see the picture clearly and could determine the exact effect- either a pop-up or an infection.

Yeah, except that I usually won't click on links posted by people I don't know...

However, the SmitfraudFix log you posted indicated you are infected so please do this:

It would be a good idea to print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
Just before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please provide details on how your computer is running as well...

Note: That IE window does still pop up. As I was typing this reply, a seperate IE window popped up with that Internet Speed Monitor as shown above. Is this a pop-up, or do I still have some kind of problem? Thanks again for all the help!

You have the latest version of Smitfraud and the fix hasn't been updated yet to kill it... I will need to see if we can manually kill it... Please do this:

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall...

and then post a fresh HJT log after a reboot and the ComboFix log...

Please download a fresh copy of SmitfraudFix and use Option 2 again... I am not sure it has been updated, but it probably has... You will need to disable TeaTimer so that the HJT fixes are not blocked...

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

It looks like you may also have AVG Anti-Spyware resident protection turned on... That means that both programs are likely to be less effective and both may block the HJT fixes... Please turn that off as well and only turn one back on when the fixes are complete...

Then please open a HJT scan and put checks by any of these that remain...

I don't see anything wrong at this point... How is your system running??

In addition to running AVG Antispyware and TeaTimer, it looks like you are also running CounterSpy and it is not clear if you have a firewall installed... Running 3 resident antispyware programs at the same time is likely to make them all ineffective and running without a firewall is almost guaranteed to get you infected...

Please let me know how things are going since there is a bit more to do if you are okay...

System seems to running good. It's running fast again. Also, it looks like I may be just using Windows firewall, plus I think my router has a firewall too? Any suggestions if you don't think this is sufficient? Thanks again for all the help!

Windows firewall is not sufficient and even they upgraded it in Vista... Here is my prevention speech with more ideas:

Please consider using these ideas to help secure your computer. While there is no way to guarantee safety when you use a computer, these steps will make it much less likely that you will need to endure another infection. While we really like to help people, we would rather help you protect yourself so that you won't need that help in the future.

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "Critical Updates" for Windows. These will patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. Your current versions appear to be outdated.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates or get into the habit of checking Windows Update regularly. They usually have security updates every month. You can set Windows to notify you of Updates so that you can choose, but only do this if you believe you are able to understand which ones are needed. This is a crucial security measuer.

As a minimum, you need at least an antivirus, firewall and some type of anti-spyware program.

Please consider installing and running some of the following programs; they are either free or have free versions of commercial programs:

Spybot-Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download)
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html). Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features if you don't have the resident part of another anti-spyware program running.

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent malware from ever installing on your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html).

SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for real-time protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial50.html).

If you use Internet Explorer, it is a good idea to use IE-Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) which provides protections against malicious websites.

Please keep these programs up-to-date and run them whenever you suspect a problem to prevent malware problems. A number of programs have resident protection and it is a good idea to run the resident protection of one of each type of program to maintain protection. However, it is important to run only one resident program of each type since they can conflict and become less effective. That means only one antivirus, firewall and scanning anti-spyware program at a time. Passive protectors, like SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad can be run with any of them.

Note that there are a lot of rogue programs out there that want to scare you into giving them your money and some malware actually claims to be security programs. If you get a popup for a security program that you did not install yourself, do NOT click on it and ask for help immediately. It is very important to run an antivirus and firewall, but you can't always rely on reviews and ads for information. Ask in a security forum that you trust if you are not sure. If you are unsure are looking for anti-spyware programs, you can find out if it is a rogue here:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is a very good alternative. In addition to being generally more secure than Internet Explorer, it has a very good built-in popup blocker and add-ons, like NoScripts, can make it even more secure. Opera is another good option.
If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)
Opera is available here: http://www.opera.com/download/

For much more useful information, please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How did I get infected in the first place (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=60955)

Hopefully these steps will help to keep you error free. If you run into more difficulty, we will certainly do what we can to help. :)

Also, you need to update Java since older versions are vulnerable...]

Updating Java:

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add or Remove Programs.
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
They should have this icon next to any that are there: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.gif
Select any found and click Remove.
Then Download and install the newest version from here:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
