blank black screen in safe mode? xp

hi guys,

i need some help, when i get into safe mode i get a blank
black screen, other then the words in white "safe mode" on each corner and the current OS that i am running at the top of the screen.
can i get some help please?

or if this is how safe mode works could you direct me as to how to interact with the interface.

How long do you let it wait?

I've seen it take over five minutes for the desktop to appear, in Safe Mode...
