Hello,
I have a problem in which IE7 opens an "about:blank" page immediately after I close certain files/applications (such as "My Pictures" and the Recycle Bin).
I ran a full spyware scan (AOL's McAfee version) - no spyware found.
My HijackThis scan results:

* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
It's explained there with images how to allow the ActiveX to start the scan, so read that first.
Then click the F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta link.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
Click the Full System Scan button.
It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
The main scan will start.
Once the scan finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
Then click the Show report button and copy and paste what's present under results in your next reply.
* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
* Click here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml) to use the F-Secure Online Scanner
Then click the Start Scanning button below.
You should get a notification (bar on top) to install the activeX. Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here (http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols-faq.shtml).
Click the Full System Scan button.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Install AVG Anti-Spyware
Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG Anti-Spyware
You will need to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files.
On the top of the main screen click Shield and then [active] to change it to inactive
On the top of the main screen click Update and then Start Update.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions: (...it's important that all windows must be closed)
* Click Scanner and then the Scan tab
* Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
* Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your Desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware and Reboot.
Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
Just before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the Desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your Desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your Desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
Post the logs and let me know how things seem to be running...

ClassicSoftware, I appreciate your continued assistance. Before I embark on these two anti-spyware programs, I wanted to confirm that it's okay to proceed, because I don't think I gave a complete description of my problem in my initial post. I'm not actually having a problem with my IE7 browser - it launches fine and opens to the set home page. I can open and surf to any web page normally. The only problem is that only when I close certain windows applications (e.g., control panel, my pictures, recycle bin), then a mini IE browser window suddenly pops up with the "about:blank" page. But from there, if I choose to use that "about:blank" window, I can readily type in a URL and navigate to a website, or open a bookmark, etc. So the main issue is the annoyance of that (otherwise usable) IE popup, which I have to close to get off my screen. One more thing, when I view the source of the "about:blank" page, the result is a notepad document titled "Blank Page - Windows Internet Explorer", and the text of the document reads:
<HTML></HTML>
Other than this strange IE about:blank popup, the system is otherwise running fine.
In light of these additional details, do you still recommend that I proceed with the AVG and/or SDFix remedies? I was researching more on the SDFix, which does sound like a good program for nixing those pesky "backdoor" contaminants. Is that the goal here - to try to get rid of those remaining malware items still existing in quarantine status?
Thank you, hope you have a great day at work!

Hi Classicsoftware, thank you for your reply. I wasn't planning on trying those new anti-spyware programs until tonight, so in the meantime I continued further research and came upon a thread in another tech forum that actually did the trick! I went into IE settings (tools --> internet options --> advanced --> browsing --> and then deselect/uncheck "Enable third party browser extensions". Supposedly it requires a reboot to take effect, but I decided to try out opening/closing another window (control panel, my pictures) before rebooting. Surprise -- the IE about:blank pop-up did NOT happen! I don't know if the situation will remain fixed after I reboot, but for now I'll just keep on going as is and I guess I'll find out later (after a reboot) whether all is still well.
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me with this issue. It's a good thing those anti-spyware programs you recommended actually did catch a number of malware problems on my system. If the IE popup problem happens again, I'll go ahead and try the other two programs you mentioned. For now, I'm a happy computer user again. :)

I would kindly suggest you continue the removal process as Classicsoftware laid out.
When you get an infection you will almost always have multiple infections, not just one or two. The infections you get will open security holes allowing more infectors to load on your PC.
The about:blank is just an annoying symptom that takes place after a partial removal of an infection. Fixing that symptom does not mean the system has been cleaned.

Hi PrntRhd, thank you for your suggestion. Yes, it's actually been on my conscience about not having followed up with the additional spyware removal procedures yet. I know there's got to be some malware still lurking in the system, and I agree there's nothing I'd like more than a perfectly clean system.
To be honest, I was worried about running so many different anti-spyware programs after another to the point where I have to run that SDFix program in "Safe Mode" -- ironically, I feel unsafe when I have to run a program in safe mode  , because it brings back haunting memories of when I had a major virus and/or hard drive crash and therefore had no choice but to work things and reinstall files in "safe" mode. But I suppose if you and classicsoftware can assure me that I won't be causing any "side effects" by running all these utilities, then I'll have the confidence to go ahead and do so. What do you think? Is it even possible to have a 100% infection-free system? Like you said, if one infection happens, then more security holes develop, leading to even more infectors loading the system?
Thank you for your encouragement. :)

This leads me to believe there is malware installed. I don't know enough about third party extension in IE7 to know for sure. Many foxes require safe mode as there is less of Windows loaded to interfere with the fix. The choice remains yours of course...

This leads me to believe there is malware installed.
Yes, I think you're right. I re-enabled third party extensions, and sure enough, the annoying about:blank page pops up again. From another source, "Turning off third-party browser extensions in Internet Explorer will prevent some spyware programs from installing on your computer. Disabling third-party browser extensions is just a workaround and does not eliminate the root of the problem. Use Toolbarcop and spot the malware BHO causing the problem."
So I decided to give this a try:
ToolbarCop, a browser extensions manager which can disable or eliminate the following browser add-ons selectively from Internet Explorer:
Browser Helper Objects (BHO)
Toolbars
Standard Toolbar buttons
Context menu Extensions
Download managers
Protocol Handlers
Horizontal / Vertical Explorer Bars (side-search bars)
Startup applications originating from RUN registry keys.
I got a long list of BHOs and extensions, now I'm just trying to disable one by one via trial and error to see if by chance I get lucky and find out which is the culprit. But then again, if it's spyware, I don't fully see how disabling or deleting a simple browser extension will help. Anyway, I'll give it a try. If no luck, I'm definitely going to try the other anti-spyware programs you recommended.
Thank you again!

There is nothing that jumps out at me. I would disable all of them and add them back one at a time and see where it fails.... Let me know how you progress....

I would disable all of them and add them back one at a time and see where it fails.... Let me know how you progress....
Progress report:
1. Using ToolbarCop, I attempted to disable all extensions. Feedback from the utility was: "Cannot disable Address and Links toolbars".
2. Therefore, I selected to disable all other extensions (except for the "Address" and "Links" toolbars). All others were successfully disabled.
3. At this point, I checked to see if the about:blank pop-up problem was still happening. It was not.
4. I re-enabled each extension one by one, checking for return of the about:blank problem after re-enabling each.
5. I re-enabled all extensions, and the problem has not re-occurred. No more about:blank pop-up!
Question: I also noticed in IE7 settings, under Tools --> Programs, there's a button to "Manage Browser add-ons" where one can enable/disable extensions from there as well. I wonder how that differs from using the Toolbarcop utility to enable/disable. Any ideas?
So the current status is that the problem appears to be fixed, but I still have no idea what the cause of the problem was ... after disbling and re-enabling all extensions strangely the problem has not reoccurred.
Thank you for any additional insights you may have. I think it might be worthwhile to run those anti-spyware programs you mentioned.
Have a great weekend!

It wouldn't hurt. But I wouldn't waste the time at this point. Just keep an eye on it and post back if you need anymore help. See you on the pharmacy board.....

Ok, I think I'll take a break from the anti-spyware runs for now until something strange crops up again. Many thanks for your expertise and patience in helping me troubleshoot the problem. Yep, back to the good 'ol pharmacy board...
