I know there are two types of modems. POPoe or pop and ethernet modems. What is the difference between them and how can i tell which kind i have. I got cable high speed internet and my modem is from scientific atlanta.

I think what you're referring to is PPPoE, which stands for point-to-point protocol over ethernet. both PPP and ethernet are layer 2 protocols. DSL services require a connection-oriented protocol on layer 2 for stuff like authentication, but ethernet is a connectionless protocol and cannot provide this. PPP however, is connection-oriented so ethernet frames can be packaged inside PPP frames for use with DSL services.

If you have cable internet and not DSL, you probably don't use a PPPoE modem.
