Welcome to the PC Guide forums.
I hope someone will be along here soon who has set one up since the install manual seems somewhat lacking per the comments here:

you only need the netgear router . I take it you had the Bt modem before you purchased the netgear. Unistall the bt modem , plug the netgear router into the pc with ethernet cable , bring up internet explorer & on the address bar type in 192.168.0.1 a box will appear user name type in admin , password type in password , you are now into the routers settings , follow the set up wizard , all you will need is bt user name & passwword apply settings & thats you connected wired , now go into wireless settings , at the SSISD give your network a name , tick Enable Wireless Access Point & tick Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID) put a tick in WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) under that type in a 10 letter code for example 1234567891 press apply & thats your security password , disconnect the cable if you wish or leave that pc wired , for other wireless pc's click on wireless networks on the taskbar , highlight you named network press connect then enter the key you put in.

Don't try to connect. When the window pops up asking if you mant to connect, click on cancel. Then type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, and follow the directions in armyuk's post

Should take you into the netgear sign on , just keep at it have seen that happen before , just kept tring the address eventually worked . In the internet explorer web page go to tools/ internet options /connections & make sure the never dial a connection is selected . if that fails open a command prompt Start>Run>Command
And type in 'ping 192.168.0.1', if the ethernet card is working and TCP/IP is set up you should get a reply from the router.

i tried that command ping and it said
Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Destination host unreachable.
Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
can anyone help

Either the ethernetcard, cable or the router are not working. Check that there are no red or yellow markers in device manager for the ethernet card. try another cable and make certain that it is plugged in correctly. What lights are showing on the router? you should have power, and internet lights, and one for the port you are connected to.

Try going back to the command prompt and type IPCONFIG and enter.
What does it reply?

the lights that are showing are the power light and the internet light on yellow and the wireless light, the 1st port and the 2nd port on green and they are blinking.
thanks for all the help received so far.

the 1st port and the 2nd port on green and they are blinking.
Ahah! these should be showing a solid green light, if the port is working. What are these ports connected to?

Has the network card icon in toolbar got a cross on it saying network cable unplugged or similar ?

well i have got a wireless network adapter and when it is plugged in, it says wireless connection unavailable
The ports that are blinking are not actually connected to anything

If it is wired connection there should be an icon on toolbar like 2 small tv screens if it is not there go to start /settings /network connections & choose the local area conection ( it will say if you are connected ) right click the icon / properties then tick the box show icon when connected it will then appear in the toolbar / make sur ethernet connected to router if it says cable unplugged ( red cross in box ) you have a hardware prob , eiteher the ethernet card or cable or router , you say the lights are blinking on the router even when nothing connected I saw this on a job recently the router was faulty . If you could either borrow another or get someone to try that one on theirs .
