intel pentium microprocessors integrate some memory into the processor to improve throughput--what is it called? how does it work?

It's called cache. Memory included in the CPU that stores a certain amount of recent commands for quicker retrieval in the near future, so it's right there instead of having to search around for it again. CPU cache is called Level 1 cache or L1.

The PC Guide has a good article on System Cache (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/cache/index.htm) that explains the different types of cache and what they do. Much better explanation than I can come up with...
