1 With regard to computing, define the term benchmark.
2. What tasks does benchmarking software perform to measure the system being tested?
3. How can consumers use benchmarks to help them purchase a computer system?
4. How do benchmarks help identify bottlenecks in the system?
5. In what way does the identification of bottlenecks help a consumer purchase a computer or component?

Benchmarks have different purposes. Some benchamrks are run to test speed, others to test stability, others to isolate problems.

For example, when running the quake benchmarks you choose lower resolutions to test the speed of the processor and subsystem, you use higher resolutions to test the graphics card. With the Sisoft Sandrea benchmarks you check memory bandwidth, cpu speed, hard disk speed. With 3dmark you check directx performance. To test stablity you run quake 3 demos in a loop or sisoft sandra burn in test.

A user doesn't really have access to these benchmarks before they purchase. That's why it's important to read as many review as possible.
