So today i bought a wireless linksys router, wrt54gs. A month ago we bought a laptop that has a builtin 802.11 b/g. here is the link for the laptop
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Display&v1=12.1%26quot%3B&series_name=tx1000z_series&a1=Display&v1=12.1%26quot%3B

"Wide range of wireless options
You get 802.11b/g wireless LAN standard, or upgrade to 802.11a/b/g. Stay connected virtually anytime, anywhere, without having to hunt for hotspots, with the optional Verizon Wireless V740 1XEVDO PC ExpressCard.1"

My main computer is a xp and the laptop is vista. i connect my modem to my router. i then connect the computer to the router. so my computer is wired. I want the laptop to be wireless. I went to 192.168.1.1 and it says ssid brodcast is enabled. but then i look at the laptop and it says it cant find any signals. Also my router has some button on it that supposedly makes everything easy. i pressed that thing and it flashes white then goes yellow. i dunt know what it does.

the router that i bought was:http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=522432&Ntt=linksys&uniqueSearchFlag=true&An=text

Hello Iamcool and welcome to http://pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif
First lets clarify- your heading here says "I cant connect anything" but it sounds like your desktop IS connecting. Is that correct? If so, are you able to get on the Internet with the desktop? Next step would be some basic security. The little button on the router is supposed to set up security and allow connections to your computers with this security. I found this extremely disappointing and ended up reseting the router to defaults and set things up the way I wanted. You should change the SSID on the router and the IP range. You should also change the routers login name and password. Once a solid connection is made with your laptop, you should disable SSID broadcast. I have no idea what your (physical)neighborhood is like but if someone else can connect, they will. Is there any wireless security (WEP, WAP,... ) enabled on the router?
On the laptop, go to Start>Control panel>Network and Sharing Center>Manage network connections. Is your wireless adapter enabled? Is your wired adapter enabled? If so, disable your wired adapter (R-click, disable,...). Remember you did this because if you need to use your wired connection, you will obviously need to enable it ;) Next, R-click on the wireless adapter and click "Properties". What boxes have check marks?
Back to Network and Sharing center, click on "Manage wireless networks". is there anything listed? If your network is listed, under connection tab, what options have check marks? Under security tab, What "Security Type"? What "Encryption Type"? If your network is not listed, click "Add" and follow prompts.

That should keep you busy for a bit. Let us know where things are at and we can go from there

I would suggest making things easy on yourself... Since you just purchased the Linksys router...give Linksys Tech-support a call and have them walk you through setup.
