Next month, new products are coming out that will affect significantly the prices and performance o the computer. New chips are coming out (AMD's Barcelona and Intel's Penryn) that will be much better than the current chips out on the market. So i would wait until December (Holiday specials) to buy a computer
As for the best.. AlienWare is owned by Dell- and with Dell, you get what you pay for....

ok im looking for the best possibe performance rig on the market todayYou're looking at tinker toys compared to what's out there! :p
There are so many levels above these standard consumer-grade computers that you could get dizzy! Multi-socket systems would be next up the ladder, followed by 4-way/8-way servers. Then you've got your massively SMP'ed blade towers, followed by scalable mini-computers. Then you've got your custom supercomputers like the ones at prominent Universities, scientific facilities, and gov't computational projects. Granted the supercomputers can cost a few million USD, but hey! Money isn't a factor for you! :D

IMHO, if you want the best performance with your chosen technology you simply buy the most expensive device. That should keep you top of the line for at least one year. Well maybe not one year but, certainly for several months.

That was mean, saph.WTF?? Now it's mean to tell the truth!? I kept to the requirements! "best possibe performance rig on the market today" and "money isnt a factor"!
Or maybe you'd prefer vulcanrvn to simply buy those systems and OC them, hmmm?

Let me tell you all a little story about being clear with technical requirements...
About 2 years ago, I had an off-hand exchange with a neighbor about a new laptop. My neighbor wanted to get a new computer and wanted it to be a laptop because portability was of utmost concern. He/she (identity protected) then asked a very simple question: "Which laptop should I buy for wireless internet?" Very simple, right? I stated that every laptop found in a store like Best Buy would be guaranteed to have wireless by now, but that I favored the Centrino name for ease-of-use and guaranteed functionality. My neighbor thanked me for the advice - end of conversation.
Two weeks later, my neighbor came to see me again and was quite livid! He/she complained (and yelled a lot) about spending over $2000 on a nice laptop and how the wireless I told them about never worked! I asked him/her was he/she meant and if a Centrino-based laptop was indeed purchased. Several minutes later, we found the problem. My neighbor bought a laptop, took it CAMPING(!), and was upset that the internet didn't work on the "wireless" laptop when their cell phone did in fact have a decent signal! See the problem here?
Those of us who know a thing or two about computers hear "wireless" and jump on the notion of 802.11a/b/g/n. Standard wireless 101 topics, right? There are also other wireless technologies, but they evoke different nominations, such as cell phone-based EDGE and WWAN and MAN and the like. My neighbor had heard the term "wireless" and had also heard about surfing the internet on a computer connected to a cell phone network and, unknowing about the pitfalls, jammed the two together! I explained the nomination problems to my neighbor and pointed out that "wireless" simply means without wires, a functionality that was built into the new laptop in question in some form. Specific types of wireless technologies have much more complex names! Both from a technical white-paper standpoint and from a marketing standpoint. I also explained to my neighbor exactly what he/she was looking for, although we still parted as less than friends. ;) (Thankfully, that particular neighbor is no longer a neighbor!)
In a case such as this, who is right? Based on the limited requirements I was given, my advice was technically sound. Then again, my neighbor was not a technically-inclined person and did not know the implications of what he/she was saying. So is it my job to ask them what they mean by "wireless" when in fact they don't know themselves? Or is it their job to say something like "by the way, I want to take my laptop camping"? I argue that I could not have been reasonably expected to ask such an off-the-wall question! But on the other hand, I do now! :D Lesson learned. When someone says they want X, I let them know about Y and Z, too - just in case that's what they really want!!

Not always are those the best. Seen countless reviews and benchmarks where other systems of varying prices beat out more expensive ones.
Just because a computer uses the latest and greatest doesn't mean it'll be the best. Things like compatibility and how well the hardware work with each other become a factor.
Look at the cards that came out around the release date of Vista. People bought those expecting a lot but the drivers for the Vista version might've been an earlier version which didn't take full effect of the capabilities.
Better drivers are out now but in those months as they tuned it better cards came out.
Most expensive, impressive looking pc isn't always the best one out there.
