A friend brought this pc to me, it is a Compaq D500 desktop and he said lightning hit one day and the pc never could go on the net afterwards, I tried reinstalling the driver, no change, I tried using another PCI NIC card, still doesn't work, help?

Just called up the friend to get the hole story, he said that lightning took out the power in his neighborhood and when power resumed, he could not go on the net so he called up verizon and they walked him through some steps then Verizon came to the conclusion that his NIC onboard card was shot which is what I thought also. I have installed this PCI NIC card I pulled out of another old pc but don't know for sure if it works but immediate problem is I can't seem to find the correct driver for this, can anyone help me locate the correct driver for this please?

The exact name of this card is

Compaq Netelligent 10/100TX UTP PCI controller

one of these here should be it?

he said lightning hit one day
how exactly did it get hit?
my first thought is that the mobo is fried, but you seem to imply that the computer is working fine otherwise...
it is possible that the network system itself is fried within the mobo (while the rest of it works fine)
either way- the only way to fix that is to buy a PCI network card or to buy a new mobo. (i think, if i read your post, you say you already tried a new PCI card, right ?)

ah- thank you for clarification!
will be doing a search for drivers now!
HP may no longer support that PCI product- but PCI NET cards are inexpensive ($20.00 for a decent one)

well yes, a new nic card would be the last resort but I am trying to see if I can find the correct driver for the one I have first.

If you can't find the right one at HP, copy and post the info from the top of the main chip on the pci card and we can look for drivers elsewhere like at the manufacturer of the chips on the card itself.

copy and post the info from the top of the main chip on the pci card

how do I know which is the main chip and also what do you mean by the "top" of the main chip, do you mean what's written on the chip itself or what's written on the board itself above the chip?

There should be 2 chips of some size on the card. Get the information from the tops of the chips themselves not on the pcb. The card (pcb) being made for Compaq probably has their own system of model numbers so it will be useless to Google that. The chip info is what we need.

The biggest chip [which looks like the main chip] has this info:

TLAN
TNETE100APGE
E303W-71AJL8W

Don't even bother trying to find a driver for that card...especially if you are trying to use it for something later than Win2K...

Win2K is the last supported (HP/Compaq) OS for that card.

Just go grab a new card.

That was bothering me all day becuase when I tried downlaoding what i thought would be the correct driver, it kept showing that it was for win2k, thanks for confirming, will have my friend get a new card.
