Is it possible for me to convert a parallel port(25 pin)use for the printer to a serial port(9 pin). I have tried to do this by simplly buying a converter; however when I connect the device to the pc (using win 3.1 on a 365 ibm thinkpad)it is not recognized. Do I need to go into bios to make changes in order for this conversion to be complete????

Are you using a converter or an adapter? Either way, what is the device you are trying to connect -- a serial printer? If it's anything else, I don't think you can. Except for the special case of direct PC-to-PC connection, or external Zip or CD-RW drives that need special drivers, that parallel port is always going to be LPT1.

tjaymadison, thanks for your reply. I am trying to connect a smart card reader to my laptop and serial port 1 is being used. I purchased a adapter from best buy, but did not have any luck. From your post it sounds like I can not use this adapter....Thanks again for your reply.

No can do........all you can do is "swap" out the use of the serial port currently in use or have someone add in a serial port card on the mainboard for you.
