View Full Version : Beep Code
On an earlier post, I read that 1 beep might be because the memory might need to be reseated. But, I asked if it meant that POST found nothing wrong. I didn't get a reply from amyone,so can someone please let me know?
When I go into setup and disable Quiet Boot, I get 1 beep, I go back in and enable it. No beep, but I don't any error code either. Does disabling Quiet Boot give 1 beep after POST finds everything OK? Thanks.

One beep is normal for most PCs. I think Compaqs have a double beep.

Thanks Reid. I couldn't find anything out about it. All I could find was 1 beep meant that memory needs to be reseated. And in another forum a guy was telling me that Quiet Boot had NOTHING to do with a beep or not. I thought I was losing it for a sec. Thanks again.

Nope, you're not losing it. One beep means BIOS is happy, everything should be ready to go. Quiet Boot disables that beep.
If you have a memory problem you'll get a certain beep code. With my machine it's either 8 beeps or a constant repeating single beep, depending on the situation. 8 beeps can also mean the video card needs to be reseated. I have Award BIOS, AMI may be different, but it will also give a certain beep code when no memory is found. One beep with either means everyting is cool.
When I reworked this machine recently I got the constant repeating beep, the DIMM slots had never been used in 5 years and were dirty I think, I had to reseat the chip 5 times before it got good contact and worked. Since then, no problems.
