man honestly...wait a lil bit.. wait til november maybe december.. but til november at least... i was gonna build a system to celebrate call of duty 4 and NFS Pro street, etc. but its all held up.. Intel and AMD will be releasing new CPUs and Nvidia and ATI..new GPUs.. very very soon and i guess its worth the wait...
if you realize im a newbie too! well on this forum.. but they suggest the 8800GTS 320 MB at least.. i was gonna go with that 8600GTS but the 8800GTS far out weighs the competition aka ATI.. i love the rest of the config tho... but as others suggest..."Ajmukon" and "saphalline" the bosses and the most helpful it seem on this forum.. not to forget "artp209" hehe thanks to them... they say wait and they have won me over.. even tho the prices of the new goodies might be high when released ( well some)... see it this way.. the stuff you willing to buy now will get cheaper ;)

wickedestman some good advise there ;)

yep definitely go for a 8800*** i have been looking at benchmarks and the new 8800GT is coming soon and that fills the gap between the 8800GTS and the GTX and it looks cheaper and takes less power..

November - January will have a new line of CPU's, MOBO's and GPU's so is there any point in buying stuff that will be outdated in a month ;) wait... see if you like the new stuff (and its price) then make your decision

"Ajmukon" and "saphalline"

hehe what about me :D not had much time to post lately :(

Alpollo, you don't say for what you intend to use the new computer. The 8600GTS will provide good quality graphics, but I would want to give upgrading the video card priority for 3D gaming. If you consider frame rate of action displays, the 8800GTS is a big jump in performance and actually results in less cost per frame displayed in a second. If you don't plan to play the high end games, then it would be wasted money. In any event, you may have lots of options if the prices come down next month as predicted.

The AMD CPUs are old! And the newest CPU- Barcelona- comes out next month  in stages.

stick with intel for now. what you have selected seems good.
please post LINKS to those parts so that we may look at exactly what you are looking at.
Remember, in the next few weeks, these prices WILL change- so just create a list, but do not buy until late Nov.

all good.
And the best part is: prices will decrease a bit next month
you may want to change the GPU to the 8800 GT 512MB

what with the PCI-E 2.0 will it work in a PCI-E 16X slot the 8800gt has PCI-2.0 and most mother boards have PCI-E 16X.

Ajmukon

I have no idea
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express
- says PCIe 2.0 is backward compatible with PCIe 1.1.. but not whether it is forward compatible.

It's the only thing that concerned me on your original post.

First of all, it's called PCIe x16, not 16x. The number-x is for AGP, as in AGP 8x. The x-number is for PCIe, as in PCIe x1. Nitpicky perhaps, but the whitepapers are very specific!!

Secondly, PCIe is scalable and bidirectionally compatible. A PCIe 1.x vid card will work in a PCIe 2.x slot and vice versa. A PCIe 1.x vid card will also work in a PCIe 3.x slot when that spec is finalized, and 4.x, and so on until PCIe is replaced. That was one of the primary requirements of the new expansion bus when candidates were being considered all those years ago. The actual pin assignments for PCIe stay the same throughout the scalable spec, only the bandwidth per data pin changes. That also means the power output of PCIe will never change, but so far that hasn't been a problem.

So yes, you can put a PCIe 2.0 x16 vid card (like the 8800 GT) into a PCIe 1.x x16 slot. It works just fine, like it's supposed to. You can also put an older PCIe 1.x x16 vid card (like a Radeon X600) into a new mobo with a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot. I love it when they make things that work! :D Much better than AGP!

well, since i wasn't sure bout that, i did not say anything to the contrary.

and now that i know, i will spread the knowledge..
