Ihave PC66 SDRAM memory does this mean my front side speed is 66mhz

Your Ram or Memory is running at a maxium rate of 66 Megahertz. This is not your Front Side Bus. To find that out you must find the model of your processer e.g.. AMD or Pentium. Usually your front side bus will be around 200MHZ which means you can run PC66,100,133 memory modules. Hope that seems clear.

Thanks diurnal, now tell me this, I have a AMD K6-2 333mhz it runs on 95 mhz. I want to upgrade UPC to a Amd K6-2 380 (I was told that was the largest I can go w/my socket & mobo)it runs at 95 mhz also will I have problems? I know I have a lot, but problems with the upgrade. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Your RAM will work with the new processor. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif
For adding the new processor you will most likely need to change the Jumpers on the motherboard. If you need help doing this post back more information on your machine. Mobo model, Sound card , video card.

The question will any k6-2 processor work depends on the motherboard and if it supports the higher processors. If you post back which motherboard you have we could see what info is available. Plus someone who is using the MOBO might be able to answer.

If your motherboard is jumperless, you will need to change to the settings for a 380 mhz in the bios under "cpu config" or something like that. If you motherboard is jumper type, you will need to change the "multiplier" setting to "4" @ 95 mhz and check on the cpu chip to see if the cpu voltage is different than the chip you currently run...if different, you will need to change the voltage also by jumper.

Does your motherboard support 100 mhz? If it does, you can go all the way to a K6-2 550......assuming you have a 5.5 multiplier setting on the mobo. Again, you will need to check the voltage to make sure you have the right voltage setting for any of these new chips. The AMD K6-2 550 is the fastest Socket 7 chip availale on the market....end of an era http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The mobo is a Packard hell 950 socket7. Core voltage jumpers 2.2v,2.8v, 2.9v, 3.2v. Intel CPU/Bus x1.5/x3.5, x2.0, x2.5, x3.0, x4.0, x4.5, x5.0, x5.5 jumpers. CPU clock jumpers from 60-100MHz
Onboard L2 cache=512

THIS IS YOUR LUCKEY DAY http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif........You can run a AMD K6-2 500 in that puppy if you want to (5.5 multiplier @ 100 mhz & core voltage @ 2.2 volts) you could go all the way to 550 if your mobo could be set @ 2.3 volts. All other AMD K6-2's will run in it as well...ie 300-450.

Good morning Quietinthecorner.
Randy is correct you can go up to the K6-2 550mhz it has a FSB of 100.
So you would need to set the FSB to 100. the Multiplier to 5.5
The core voltage should be set at 2.3v according to the AMD website
at www.amd.com (http://www.amd.com)
However you do not have that setting. Randy do you know which core voltage she should use that will work. 2.2 or 2.8. I,m thinking she may need to do 2.8, but will gladly defer to you. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
This is what I got off the site
Processor K6-2 550 processor
Core Voltage 2.3v
Input/Output voltage 3.3v
Bus Speed 100mhz
Clock Multiplier 5.5

I've never tried going that high (2.8 when 2.3 is called for) over spec before.......since the chip is hot already I would try it at 2.2 to see if it will post up.........but the best thing to do is just drop down to a 500 mhz chip and try it at a 5.5 clock setting using the 2.2 volts...wont hurt anything and it might work! If not.......500 mhz is quick....I really like that chip http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

If your PC-66 worked @ 95 mhz it will probably still work @ 100 mhz, but no guarantees.....you will know in a hurry if it doesnt (Lock-ups galore http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)

I have another post running in the 'How do I forum' which has been going for months. It's now at the stage of suspecting the processor of overheating. Either SiSoft Sandra or Pitstop reports that the system bus speed is too high. Having read this forum, could it be that this is causing my problems? in any case, can you tell me how to check it & correct it.
Cyrix 6 x 86 : PR233 : 188Mhz

Think I'll butt in here. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I remember the topic you're referring to, seems it turned into a book...I think your main problem is the Cyrix chip. I like them, but they don't get along with win98 too well. They also run hot, and if the system bus is too fast, I'd bet you have heat problems as well as problems from being overclocked. Yes, I know 188MHz is the proper speed for the Cyrix 233, but if you get it by running the system bus too fast, it's still overclocked.
I think the best thing to do is drag out the manual and go over the jumper settings, get it set correctly for that CPU. I don't have the specs handy, so I can't give you any suggestions, but my board will handle that CPU and says it should be set on 66MHz system bus, 3x multiplier.

My manual(Amptron) shows the PR-233 should be set @ 75 mhz as a P-55C with a 2.5 multiplier(which achieves 187.5 mhz)....@ 2.9 volts. There always was a debate about what mhz & multiplier should be used for Cyrix chips & many times it was trial & error that produced the best results. My experience has always been best with Cyrix when I used the lowest Bus speed (in this case 66) and a higher multiplier (in this case 3).

SiSoft Sandra report = 75 Mhz but I can't find a 2.5 or 3 multiplier. Have looked in Setup in startup screen but can't find anything there either.
Can you tell me where I can find and change the settings.

Vic what motherboard do you have? Does it have Jumpers on it?
If so you will need to get the manual to set the jumpers correctly.
let us know.

Motherboard is a Jetway, (7 socket? I am told) I was also informed that it does have jumpers on it. I do not have a manual. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

With the power UNPLUGGED of course http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ... look ON the motherboard for INFORMATION about jumper settings stamped onto the motherboard (hopefully your mobo has them) ...you have to look closely, but you can do it even without a manual...;however, you might be able to GET a manual ON LINE by going to the Jetway web site.

Thanks. Have found the site, but my mobo (J571B) is not listed. I have e-mailed them & have found a similar board that uses the Cyrix 233.
Also I think I have found the Jumper: A block with 6 switches on it. the settings at the side of it are: 1 - 3 (combinations relative to 2,2.5,3,4.5 etc) 4 - 6 (combinations 50Mhz, 66 Mhz, 75 Mhz etc) It appears to be set at the moment at 2.5 x 75 Mhz.
If thats correct, It looks time to get ready for experimenting, & I suppose the first thing is to try 3 x 66 Mhz. But for curiosity at this stage, if the processor IS getting past its best would UNDERCLOCKING help or is this risky to try?

I have underclocked a few Cyrix chips (usually by no more than 33 mhz) when the chip was unstable at the correct clock(primarily the Cyrix 200 which I had Tons of trouble with); however, in your case I dont advise it. Try the 66 mhz setting even though it calls for a 75 mhz setting .

Have set it to 66 & all seems well. it now shows the cpu as 200 instead of 230 & its a little slower in some seldom used progs. but otherwise not a problem.
