my computer, well, the motherboard is an OEM one. an Asus P4B-LA, it shipped with my HP Pavilion 7955.
it has a P4 1.5 GHz on a processor 478.
so how high could i upgrade?

after a quick Google looks like a 2.6Ghz is your limit...
not sure how much you pay for one

Uhhh...
Socket 478 is just as dead as Socket A and Socket 754. Give up on it! The best of the best for that platform was frickin' NetBurst! :eek:
I say leave it alone and turn it into a secondary Linux box. Not worth the cost to upgrade.
