Hi all, I was thinking about adding some RAM to my computer but when I started searching online for prices I find this PC2 prefix on some of the RAM. What does the 2 mean and would it be compatable with the PC-6400 I am currently running, if it has all the same specs? Thanks

try www.crucial.com free memory scanner- it will tell you what RAM WILL WORK on your PC (its guaranteed- but the RAM they sell is pricey)

Some people like to be lazy and list DDR2-800 as PC-6400. However, the "PC" naming convention is the standard JEDEC prefix for DDR only! DDR2 has the "PC2" prefix. Also, "6400" is far too high for DDR.

So in short, what you have really is PC2-6400. It's just not labeled properly.

PC2-6400 = DDR2-800.

800 MHz effective speed x 64-bit bus width = 6400 MB per second of overall RAM bandwidth.

That's where it comes from.

They aren't different - one is just mislabeled. Unless the current RAM is non-JEDEC compliant, it definitely is DDR2.

And coming here to ask for help is already searching online for answers. That's what we do here. Don't send people away.
